Recent Form
Both sides have a disgruntled fanbase and defeat here for either could turn the atmosphere toxic. The visitors had hopes of a takeover dashed this summer and the fans are yet to take to former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, while David Moyes is facing a similar task to quell the doubters amongst his own team’s supporters in his second spell at the club.
Newcastle ended last term in poor form with four defeats from five winless games, though it should be noted that three of these came against Man City, Liverpool and Spurs, while the other defeat was inflicted by a Watford side fighting for their lives.
Both Teams To Score
The Hammers did however find some form at the end of last season, losing just one of their final seven matches (W3-D3-L1). Moyes still hasn’t been able to shore up his defence though, as they conceded at least twice in nine of their last 16 fixtures, with the sole clean sheet coming against basement dwellers Norwich.
In fact, on home turf alone, the Hammers have just one shutout in 16 matches now too, as both teams scored in 12 of them.
Moyes can also point to a healthy record against fellow bottom-half sides last term. West Ham won four of eight such unbeaten games under him, as six of these saw a minimum of four goals and both teams scored in seven of the last eight.
Both teams have also scored in five of their past seven against anyone, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a few goals here.
Over 3.5 Goals
There have been at least three strikes in five of six head to heads since Newcastle returned to the top flight, as half of these saw a minimum of four.
That includes a 3-2 win for Newcastle at this venue last term, as well as a 2-2 stalemate back at St. James’ Park, so we could be set for an explosive start.
Whereas Newcastle went W3-D5-L1 hosting bottom-half sides, on the road they were a more beatable W3-D2-L4. Those away days weren’t always conservative affairs with four of nine featuring at least four goals, and we’re inclined to have a punt on that.
West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski remains a key player but age did appear to bring about a slight decline last term.
Moyes has struggled for defensive reinforcements, while January signing Tomas Soucek is expected to be unavailable in defensive midfield after coming into contact with someone who was tested positive for Covid-19 in the Croatian setup.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s team news also suggests goals. Key man between the sticks Martin Dubravka is out for months, defender Fabian Schar is still recovering from a shoulder operation, while there are a couple of other absentees for Steve Bruce.
Crucially however, he can call upon star men Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron in attack, while new signings Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser are also available, even if the latter lacks match fitness.
