West Brom v Leicester Preview And Betting Tips

West Brom make their return to the Premier League when they welcome Leicester to the Hawthorns on Sunday. The Baggies secured promotion back to the top-flight last season courtesy of a second place finish, however Slaven Billic’s team will be under no illusion that securing Premier League status will be plenty of hard work beginning with Leicester who finished in fifth place last term. Kevin Campbell and Neil Mellor give their expert opinions ahead of the game, while tipsters Form Labs guide you to where the value might lie with their betting preview and tips.

Recent Form

Leicester spent the vast majority of last season in the top three but ended up in fifth – a full four points behind Man Utd and Chelsea – following a disastrous end to the season where they won just three of their final 14 fixtures and suffered six defeats.

West Brom experienced a similar collapse during the second half of the campaign. They’re just W3-D5-L4 in all competitions since late February, but they can count themselves fortunate that Brentford failed to capitalize on that form in the Championship last term, which would have consigned them to the play-offs.

The top three finishers in the second-tier last term matched each other for output with Leeds (77), West Brom (77) and Brentford (80) all exciting going forwards. However, the Baggies conceded 10 times more than Leeds and seven more than the Bees, so expect their defence to come under heavy scrutiny.

Indeed, recruitments at the back have been in short supply, with West Brom’s significant moves in the transfer market to bring back loan stars Mateus Pereira (Sporting CP) and Grady Diangana (West Ham) on permanent deals.

The Foxes scored more goals than everyone bar Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea last term, only netting two fewer than the latter, so the Baggies could get a rude awakening on their return to the top flight.

Leicester To Beat West Brom

Leicester won 13 of 20 matches facing bottom-half sides last term and have won five of their last eight visiting promoted outfits, so we’d take them at evens to at the very least edge this encounter.

Although Leicester look set to tuck an early win under their belt, they’ve only managed six clean sheets in 23 matches now since early December, and just two from 12 road trips in this time.

Visiting bottom-half sides alone, they took just the solitary clean sheet from seven appearances, as both teams scored in five of these games.

Both Teams To Score

Meanwhile, both sides have also registered in six of Leicester’s nine trips to promoted outfits over the past three campaigns. In fact, home or away, they’ve kept just one clean sheet in their past nine such matches.

Brendon Rodgers also has some absentees to deal with. New signing Timothy Castagne should slot in at right back with Ricardo Pereira out until October, but on the other flank Christian Fuchs is in a race to be fit, with Ben Chillwell having departed the club.

There are further problems at the back as Wes Morgan is a doubt and Jonny Evans, who was suspended in any case, has a thigh complaint.

James Maddison is also doubtful with a hip issue, but Leicester have other attacking talents capable of plugging the gap.
