Paul Ince Exclusive: Liverpool Firepower To Pile The Misery On

Everton will approach the first Merseyside derby of the season with a sense of trepidation – and former Reds star Paul Ince expects Liverpool to heap more misery on their city rivals. Rafa Benitez takes on his former side at Goodison Park tonight following a disastrous run of results, which has seen the Toffees lose five of their last six matches and pick up just two points in two months. And Ince is expecting another tough evening when they face Jurgen Klopp’s high-flying outfit, despite leaving the door open for a potential shock.

Form Out The Window

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “You can never tell (what the result will be). When it comes to derby games, form goes out the window.

“Obviously that wasn’t the case when it came to (Manchester) United and City or United and Liverpool, but it’s at Goodison Park and that’s a tough place to go on a Wednesday night.

“When Rafa first got there, they started off so well and sometimes that happens with a football team.

“A new manager comes in, things are going really well, then all of a sudden, the novelty wears off, and then things don’t start to go so well.”

Calvert-Lewin’s Injury A Blow

The ex-England international has attributed much of Everton’s struggles to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury-enforced absence, after the Toffees’ talisman netted three goals in as many appearances in the opening weeks of the season.

“I just think they’ve struggled without Calvin-Lewin,” he explained.

“We’ve seen what he’s done in the last couple of years. (Salomon) Rondon is a good player, but I don’t think he’s the answer.

“I think Calvin-Lewin has been a massive, massive miss for Everton, I really do. They’ve struggled because of that.”

Liverpool Firepower

In contrast, Ince was effusive in his praise of Liverpool’s attacking stars, with the Reds scoring four times without reply in each of their previous two league outings.

I think Liverpool will go there and win the game,” he said.

“They’ve got too much firepower, they’re back to where they were.

“People forget last year, there was no (Virgil) van Dijk, there was no (Joel) Matip, they had so many injuries in the back four. They did ever so well to get in the Champions League.

“But you look at them this year and you think they’re back to their best.

“The front four – a great bit of business getting (Diogo) Jota in – they’re back to their best.

“I thought last year they looked tired – you’ve got to remember, (Mohamed) Salah and (Sadio) Mane were playing every week.

“There was no respite for them. This year they seem back to their best.

“I can’t see anything but a Liverpool win – not because I played for Liverpool, but I just think they’re playing so well.

“I think Liverpool win this game – I wouldn’t say comfortably because the noise will be electric, but I still think Liverpool have got too much for Everton at this moment in time.”
