A 2-0 win in the first leg means Man City now have one foot in the quarter-finals and barring a catastrophic performance, we’d fully expect the English side to be in the draw for it.
Despite their winning run coming to an end against their city rivals, they’ve bounced back exceptionally with three goal wins over Southampton and Fulham to leave them with 23 wins from their last 24 matches, keeping 14 clean sheets in that time so we’d be surprised if they were to be turned over here, especially against a side in this form.
Borussia Monchengladbach have now lost six successive matches in all competitions for the first time since September 2015, and it’s no coincidence that the slump in form has coincided with manager Marco Rose announcing he will be taking charge of Borussia Dortmund at the end of the campaign.
Morale and confidence are certainly low in the Gladbach camp as a result, and that’s not a recipe for success when coming up against a side of City’s quality.
Man City To Win And Over 2.5 Goals
The German side have only played twice in England this century, with both matches coming at the Etihad in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 group stages.
City ran out winners on both occasions, scoring four times in each so it’s not exactly like the visitors have a strong head-to-head record to fall back on here.
It’s therefore no surprise to see the hosts as short as they are in the 1x2 market, and it looks likely we’ll have to combine that with another in order to gain some value.
While City have been lauded for their defensive resolve during this winning spell, they’ve also managed to score goals nearly as regularly as they used to in the early days of Guardiola’s reign.
Indeed, across their last 10 wins they’ve averaged exactly three goals per game, scoring 12 from their last three alone as eight of those 10 games saw a minimum of three goals in total across the 90 minutes.
There are no two ways about it, Gladbach need to go gung-ho for victory here, as they need to score at least three times to have a chance of going through and avoiding a penalty shootout, and that approach could leave plenty of space for the hosts to exploit.
We’d expect Man City to register up at least two goals on home soil, especially seeing how clinical they’ve been lately, and the victory on the handicap looks a strong bet, though at the prices we’re more inclined to go for the match result and over 2.5 goals to add a bit more value.
