Leeds have waited 14 years for a taste of Premier League football again, and it doesn’t come much sweeter than against the defending Champions. The Whites came up as Championship winners after Marcelo Bielsa stamped his brand on the squad, and if they’ve proved anything it’s that they’ll be incredibly hard to beat and won’t stop going until the final whistle.
Despite impressively winning their first Premier League title last year, Liverpool haven’t quite been the same side since they lost 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano back in February. That result was the beginning of a run of W7-D2-L7 across all competitions when including extra time and penalties.
They started off their campaign with a penalties defeat in the Community Shield to Arsenal, though in fairness to the Reds they suffered the same fate to Man City at the beginning of last season before winning 27 of their opening 28 unbeaten games in the league, so we wouldn’t read too much into that.
What Leeds fans may be wary of is Liverpool’s current 59 match unbeaten run at home in the league, winning 25 of the last 26 as the just fell short of a 100% home record last season.
What’s more, the Champions are unbeaten on the opening day of the season since 2012/13, winning six of seven matches so it’s difficult for us to get behind the visitors all things considered.
Leeds +1.5 Asian Handicap
Leeds made a point of their defensive stability last season with just 35 goals conceded. While they’re weren’t tested against the kind of opposition they’ll be faced with in the coming campaign, that remains the best tally since Middlesbrough conceded just 31 in 2015/16, so they won’t roll over easy and the hosts may find this more of a challenge than they did newly promoted Norwich at the beginning of last season.
While Marcelo Bielsa is untested in the Premier League, he proved his worth as one of the world’s best with his time in charge of Athletic Bilbao, and we’d be very surprised if his well-drilled team was overrun here and we’d expect a reasonably tight contest.
Liverpool To Win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1
Liverpool made a habit of scoring late goals last season, and with Leeds likely to be one of the fittest sides in the league they may struggle to keep that habit intact.
Without goals in the last 10 minutes of games, Liverpool would have won just eight of their 19 home matches last season by more than a single strike, and just five of their last 16.
While it’s hard to go against Liverpool to get the three points, Leeds’ fitness levels leave them a good proposition on the handicap, while the multibet is also worth a flutter.
