Recent Form

Germany followed up their 2018 World Cup flop with relegation in the inaugural Nations League, at least until UEFA changed the format. They were however handed a tough draw against world champions France and a resurgent Netherlands side, who eventually lost out in the final to Portugal.

Joachim Low managed to stave off the sack and has managed to regroup, with seven wins from eight Euro qualifiers, while he’s changed the profile of the squad with younger players coming through.

He generated some controversy in axing some of the old guard, especially the still-influential Thomas Muller, but a lack of star names didn’t hinder them in their 2014 World Cup triumph and there’s still plenty of talent that remains.

They’ll have to call upon it as Bayern treble winners Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry are all absent here. However, the likes of Toni Kroos, Julian Draxler, Emre Can and Ilkay Gundogan offer options in midfield, while Leroy Sane, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner are hardly a bad trio to call upon in attack.

Luis Enrique’s forward options aren’t quite so good and Spain have struggled with a lack of creativity or a prolific goalscorer. In addition, he’s left strikers Paco Alcacer, Alvaro Morata and Iago Aspas out of the squad.

Of those called upon, the players with the most goals are Sergio Ramos (21), new Leeds signing Rodrigo (eight) and 34-year-old converted full-back Jesus Navas (five).

Experience is also an issue too. Beyond the Real Madrid captain and Barcelona’s ageing Sergio Busquets, only Navas and the struggling David de Gea even possess at least 40 caps, though it’s worth noting the likes of Dani Carvajal and Thiago also offer experience.

That’s still not a lengthy list and given 15 of the 24-man squad have just 10 caps or fewer, Germany certainly have the edge in that department.

Germany Draw No Bet

Spain have been far more convincing on home turf and their Euro qualifiers have yielded victories over Norway (2-1), Sweden (3-0), the Faroe Islands (4-0), Malta (7-0) and Romania (5-0).

However, it’s been a different story on their travels, where they could only put two goals past Malta, laboured to a 2-1 win over Romania and drew 1-1 with both Norway and Sweden last October.

We’d have to favour Die Mannschaft on home turf, but if there was a concern it would be at the back. Excluding encounters with very weak outfits Belarus and Estonia, they’ve manged just two clean sheets in their past 11 matches, as even those came in a friendly against Russia and when visiting a low-scoring Northern Ireland side.

Further, key centre-back Niklas Sule has only just returned from nearly a year on the sidelines, receiving a combined 151 minutes across Bayern’s recent Champions League run against Chelsea, Barcelona, Lyon and PSG.

Given they’ll be no Manuel Neuer or Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal, while Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels had their international careers ended alongside Muller, the defence is missing a heap of experience.

Both Teams To Score

Spain last failed to score when going down 2-0 to Italy in Euro 2016, a run that stretches back 40 games now. Both teams have scored in six of seven clashes with top sides England, Croatia, Portugal, Argentina and Germany themselves since 2018.

Meanwhile, the hosts have seen both sides register in each of their last five clashes with the best they’ve faced (France, the Netherlands and Argentina) since mid-October 2018.

Germany Draw No Bet At 8/11

Both Teams To Score At 4/6
