Emmanuel Petit Exclusive: Mount Needs To Do More

Emmanuel Petit believes Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount must “do more and more” if he wants to be a part of England’s World Cup squad this winter. Mount has yet to score this term, although he registered his first two assists of the league campaign in the Blues’ 3-0 win over Wolves last weekend. Petit feels that Graham Potter’s side are playing in a way that is more suited to the 23-year-old recently, but has suggested that the Englishman needed to kick on in the coming weeks.

Mount Needs To Adapt

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “Something has changed on the pitch.

“The ball is going quickly to Mount and it’s more direct and that suits Mason Mount.

“He likes to play direct football, but Mount needs to do more and more if he wants to go to the World Cup and play at the top level in the Champions League.”

Pulisic Praise

Petit was also impressed with Christian Pulisic’s impact against Wolves, but suggested the USMNT star would need to maximise his minutes in order to earn more playing time.

“I heard what Pulisic’s father said on the social networks - that he should show more respect and get more playing time,” he added.

“But like I said with Mason Mount, you play for Chelsea and the competition is very high.

“Look at the dressing room, how many international players and quality players are there?

“When he gets on the pitch he needs to show what he can do, and he did that against Wolves.

“I’m pretty sure he won’t be starting against Milan in the first XI but if he makes a difference when he plays, he’ll get more and more minutes.”

Leao Endorsement

Ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with AC Milan, Petit endorsed Rossoneri star Rafael Leao, who has been tentatively linked with the Blues.

“Rafael Leao is tall, powerful, fast and physical,” he explained.

“He’s got a great ability to score goals as well as anger and ambition. He’d be a good signing.

“If an English club is able to buy him then they should go for it as he will provide a lot of goals and adapt to the league quickly.”

However, Petit feels his compatriot N’Golo Kante may not remain a Chelsea player come the start of next season, with the midfielder’s injury issues making it difficult to justify his wages at Stamford Bridge.

Kante’s Future

“Kante has been tremendous for years and years,” he said.

“He’s been running around the world all the time, but I can understand Chelsea’s position.

“How can they pay so much money for someone who is always injured? He cannot play a proper game.

“I heard he’s back from training and will be fit soon, but I understand Chelsea’s position

“He’ll be a great bargain if he doesn’t sign a contract as he’ll be available for free and some clubs will be interested to get him, for sure.”
