Emmanuel Petit Exclusive: Mbappe Could Stay At PSG

French World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit believes Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe could remain in Paris – despite being heavily linked with Real Madrid. The explosive dynamo, 23, is out of contract this summer and can join another club for free ahead of the new season. PSG turned down a reported €175million offer from Real Madrid for Mbappe last summer in the hope the forward would remain at the Parc des Princes. Despite being persistently linked with Los Blancos – particularly by the Spanish press – Petit is not convinced a move to the Santiago Bernabeu is a foregone conclusion.

Future Still Undecided

Speaking exclusively to Genting, the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder said: “There are big talks [over his future] and big speculation – is he going to stay or is he going to leave? “He recently said there have been new elements in his reflections, so maybe there is a third club after him?

“There is speculation if it’s a club from England or Germany. It’s not Barcelona. So it’s Real Madrid, PSG and maybe it’s Bayern Munich, but do they have the money? Is it the policy of Bayern Munich?

“Maybe there is a club in England? People are talking about Manchester City and Liverpool, but why not Manchester United?”

Will PSG Convince Him To Stay?

However, Petit believes the final decision won’t be motivated by money but instead by things that can’t be quantified or valued.

He said: “I know Kylian is very linked to his town, the fans, family and friends, so it’s a huge decision for him.

“If PSG convince him to stay and he will be the centre of the new project, it could be enough to keep Mbappe, but it will be very difficult.”

PSG Leader

It has been a tough year for Mbappe who, along with Lionel Messi and Neymar, has been booed by PSG fans and suffered further Champions League heartbreak after going out at the hands of Real Madrid last month.

Despite that, Mbappe has hit 28 goals in all competitions this term and Petit, who won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship with Les Blues, praised the forward for putting off-field matters to one side to perform.

He said: “He was born not so far from Paris, all his family and friends are here.

“He was booed by his own fans after Euro 2020, he was under so much pressure at the beginning of the season.

“But when you look at the rest of the season, it’s incredible what he’s done in terms of quality and mental strength.

“He’s a leader at PSG.”
