Emmanuel Petit Exclusive: Snap Up Abraham And Zaha

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has told his old club to sign former Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham, likening the striker ex-Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor. Mikel Arteta’s side are surprisingly in top-four contention – having not qualified for the Champions League since the 2016-17 season – but have seen the goals dry up recently, scoring just once in their last three outings. A host of names have been linked with a move to the Emirates but Petit believes former Blues striker Abraham would fit “perfectly” at Arsenal.

Abraham The Perfect Fit

Speaking exclusively to Genting, the World Cup winner said: “I’m pretty sure he wants to come back to England and he would fit perfectly at Arsenal because he’s a different player to Alexandre Lacazette with a different style, different physique and he’s a goalscorer.

“Even at Chelsea he was scoring goals, not as many as he wanted, but he’s 24 years old so he still has a lot to learn.”

And Petit, who spent three years at Stamford Bridge before retiring in 2004, likened Abraham to a controversial former Arsenal hitman.

“He reminds me of Emmanuel Adebayor, his physical presence in the penalty area,” Petit explained.

“Abraham’s reaction when he arrived at Roma has been brilliant because he’s scored 15 [league] goals and has so many assists, so he’s enjoying his football there. He went to Italy with the feeling of revenge for what happened at Chelsea.

“He’s not stupid, he will see what’s going on with the strikers at Chelsea with Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, they’re struggling. So maybe he’s thinking, ‘It would have been worse for me if I had stayed at Chelsea’.

“He made the right decision and he’s having a great season with Roma. ”

Zaha An Additional Target

Arteta’s side are the lowest-scoring team in the Premier League’s top seven and the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has left them short in the forward department.

But Petit believes there is another attacker closer to home who could enhance the Gunners’ forward options – someone the North Londoners know only too well.

“I love watching [Wilfried] Zaha,” he said. “He’s an electric player. He can be strange on the pitch sometimes, with his provocations.

“But I really liked his reactions against Arsenal. He used to get in trouble with defenders and referees every single game, but yesterday (Monday’s 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace) he did very well.

“He controlled his reactions, he was smiling, he was very confident. It should be like that every time because the way he plays football, it’s normal sometimes for the opponents to get annoyed and want to fight with him on the pitch, but he has great skills.”

Impact On Other Arsenal Forwards

While Petit believes the 29-year-old would be well suited to the Emirates Stadium, he is wary of the potential impact on some of the club’s young forwards.

He said: “Of course, he would fit in well at Arsenal. But my question would be, what do you do with Gabriel Martinelli? Martinelli has been very good since his injury and he’s following in the same footsteps of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka.

“This is the next generation of Arsenal players and if you brought in Zaha then he’d play regular football and Martinelli would be on the bench.

“So I’m not quite sure about that. Arsenal need competition in their squad, for sure, but when you see the prospect of young players, you have to be very careful with which players you bring into the club.”
