Chelsea overcame Norwich with relative ease, apart from the penalty scored in the 69th minute by Teemu Pukki, which brought the Canaries back into the contest with only a one-goal deficit. However, a late strike from the in-form Kai Havertz sealed a deserved three points.
The Blues seemed to have turned a corner, winning their last four league games in a row, following a shaky middle section of the season where they only managed to win one game over the course of seven matches, with a W1-D5-L1 record.
Although they had only lost to City, a team of Chelsea’s stature shouldn’t be drawing on such a regular basis as they were.
After only managing one win in their first 20 games, Newcastle have gone from strength to strength by winning six of their last seven, virtually guaranteeing their Premier League survival.
They’re now unbeaten in in nine, with draws against West Ham and Man Utd their most difficult games, but Chelsea are a step up from those teams and it will be a hard task to even get a point at Stamford Bridge.
The recent sanctions over Roman Abramovich have put Chelsea’s future into limbo, with the Russian oligarch unable to sell up, while the club also faces restrictions elsewhere including in the transfer market.
The Blues can’t even make money from ticket sales, meaning that only season ticket holders will be allowed into the ground, which will make for an interesting showing when this game kicks off on Sunday.
Will the 28,000 season ticket holders be able to provide enough support for the team come kick-off time? It should certainly have a negative effect on the players.
-2.5 Goals Or 1-1 Draw
Of the last nine games that Newcastle have played, six have featured fewer than three goals, with defensive structure and stability having been regained following their winter transfer exploits – even if Kieran Trippier remains sidelined for the present.
On Chelsea’s side, seven out of their last eleven games have also seen a maximum of two goals, and though two of the exceptions have come in their most recent outings, Burnley and Norwich are very much in the thick of the battle to avoid relegation.
You could potentially find some value in the draw or 1-1 scoreline, especially given that Chelsea have proved susceptible to a 1-1 stalemate, including clashes with Brighton (twice), Burnley, Man Utd and Everton since the start of November – with four of those at Stamford Bridge.
It is also the most common scoreline between the two teams, occurring in eight of Newcastle's 27 games this season, as well as six of Chelsea’s 27 this term.
