Chelsea v Everton Preview And Predictions - Premier League Week 17

A 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace last time out has ramped up the pressure on Rafa Benitez and his future at Everton. Their loss was a fourth from their last five games, a run of results that have seen the fans starting to turn on the Spaniard and nothing short of the win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday and a decent run over the festive season will get the fans back onside. Recent Form

Two Jorginho penalties sealed a victory for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last time out, though they were run close by a Leeds side who were dismantled on Tuesday by Man City, so if the Blues want to keep their title aspirations, performances are going to have to improve starting with this clash against the Toffees.

Having overturned a 1-0 deficit to beat Arsenal 2-1, Everton seemed to have potentially turned a corner, though a 3-1 defeat against a Connor Gallagher inspired Crystal Palace at the weekend showed there’s still plenty of work to be done for Rafa Benitez if he wants to remain in charge.

Having lost just one of their opening seven games of the season, the Merseyside club have now lost seven of the subsequent nine, with that victory over Arsenal the only three points they’ve managed to pick up across their last 10 outings.

Everton are something of a bogey team for the Blues who haven’t managed to double over them for the last four seasons. Indeed, since winning the title under Antonio Conte in 2016/17, these two sides have a balanced W3-D2-L3 record each in the league, and while Everton are currently in the worst form since that run began, Chelsea aren’t exactly firing on all cylinders either, so the result isn’t a certainty here.

Chelsea To Win And Both Teams To Score

While Chelsea had been known as defensively astute during Thomas Tuchel’s reign, that seems to have fallen by the wayside a bit in recent weeks as they’ve now conceded at least twice in each of their last four outings across all competitions.

One possible explanation for it has been the absence of Trevoh Chalobah for those four games.

The young defender has started half of his side’s 16 Premier League outings this season, with goals conceded sitting at just 0.38 per game when he starts compared to 1.00 when he doesn’t, so while he’s back in training this game may come slightly too soon for him to start.

Everton’s injury list hasn’t helped Benitez, and now with Richarlison out they really are struggling for attacking options. Yerry Mina is a huge loss in the heart of defence too, while Lucas Digne and Seamus Coleman’s absences are also a massive hindrance both at the back and going forward.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin may be nearing a return, but this game will certainly be too soon for him and we can’t see any real positives for Benitez at the moment, and that players massively in favour of the hosts.

Demarai Grey will carry the bulk of the attacking threat for the visitors, and while Chelsea have been conceding at a greater rate recently, they’re also finding the net with some regularity too and we’d be surprised if they drew a blank against this makeshift backline.

The home win on the 1x2 market offers little value alone, but combined with both teams to score, there is some to be had.

PREDICTION:

CHELSEA TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
