Silva Finds The Edge
Speaking exclusively to Genting about who has impressed him this season, he said:
“I will speak about Thiago Silva because he always finds the edge. I think what he does for Chelsea, it’s magnificent.
“As you know, to play in the Premier League it’s not easy, it’s very physical and Thiago Silva is 37.
“He is the boss of that defence, he’s mature, he’s got experience, so that’s why players like (Antonio) Rudiger and (Trevoh) Chalobah – when they play next to Thiago Silva – feel secure.
“Thiago Silva, with his experience, takes all the pressure on his shoulders. So that’s why Chalobah, Rudiger, (Andreas) Christensen play so well, he is maybe one of the best defenders in the Premier League.”
Another Blues centre-back who received praise from Gallas was Antonio Rudiger, with the German continuing to marshall Chelsea’s rearguard in his fifth year at the club.
“Last season he had a great, great season, especially when (Thomas) Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard,” he explained.
“This season, he has shown just how good he is – I like him as a player because I like his desire to win; to try to win every game.
“He’s a warrior. What I was less sure on, that I’ve seen recently, is when he has an argument with one of his opponents at the end of the game.
“I don’t like to see that from players – I don’t think it’s necessary, especially if you win the game.”
Rudiger Or Christensen Must Sign New Deal
The 49-cap international is yet to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge and could depart on a free transfer in the summer – as could fellow defender Andreas Christensen.
And Gallas has urged the Blues’ hierarchy to ensure at least one of the pair puts pen to paper on an extension.
He said: “You have to re-sign at least one of them – the question is why they didn’t re-sign yet?”
“Maybe Chelsea didn’t offer them the new contract or an agreement has not been reached. That – I don’t know.
“But, you have to look to re-sign at the very least one of the defenders.”
