Ireland v New Zealand

Ireland have a single win to their name over three games in the Super 12, which came via the DLS method against England. It seemed inevitable that the Barmy Army would catch up to Ireland if given a sufficient number of overs but due to bad weather the game was abandoned and England didn’t have a good enough run rate at that point.

New Zealand were beaten by 20 runs against England in the latest match, but they still top the group with five points and have the highest net run rate in the competition of +2.233 which is 1.686 better than any other team in the group and if they win here it would almost certainly guarantee a spot in the semi-finals.

Glen Phillips has been the standout performer for the Kiwi’s and has scored the third highest number of runs in the competition with 178 to his name and sits behind Lorcan Tucker (Ireland, 191) and Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka, 205) and has the most out of anyone that has been in for no more than three innings.

Australia v Afghanistan

Australia’s home T20 World Cup didn’t start as well as the fans would have hoped but since then they have won two on the trot and are still in contention to qualify for the semi-finals. It’s important the Baggy Green’s don’t underestimate their opponents as Afghanistan have the ability to do some real damage to Australia’s title hopes.

Although Afghanistan do possess a lot of quality they haven’t lived up to expectations coming into the tournament. They’ve lost both of their games that had a ball bowled (England, Sri Lanka) but were given a draw for two games that were called off due to bad weather.

David Warner has been particularly poor this year and his high score currently stands at 11 whilst his average is 6.33 through his three innings. Luckily for Australia, Aaron Finch has picked up the slack and has scored 63 and 31 in his last two innings which has been a big part of Australia’s success. The 63 being the highest score of the match versus Ireland and the 31 being the second highest total for Australia in the game against Sri Lanka.

We think Afghanistan are good value for the highest opening partnership because of the lack of confidence that David Warner is showing, also their openers recently reached 42 before Gurbaz was caught. Australia’s opening partnerships have been 5, 25, 8.
