Afghanistan v Ireland

After the match between Afghanistan and New Zealand was called off because of rain, Afghanistan have one point after their two games in the Super 12. A loss against England in their first game means anything other than comprehensive victories in all of their remaining fixtures will see them fall short of qualification.

Ireland pulled off a historic win against England, they a set a good score of 157 through 19.2 overs and it still looked like England would be able to chase it down. However, the rain started pouring down during England’s innings and they were behind the DLS calculation which meant that Ireland walked away with the win.

We believe that if the Ireland v England went the distance that England would have picked up their run rate and eventually won the game. Afghanistan are a far superior team to the Ireland and they themselves fell short of England in their first game of the Super 12.

These two have played each other on 18 occasions since 2017 and Afghanistan have a record of W14-L4 during this time. It must be said that Ireland are getting better as a cricketing nation and all four of their wins came in the last six matches, though three of these came when playing in Ireland and these conditions will likely suit the Asian side more. The Irish have only won one of the last 11 games between the two at neutral venue, which was in a super over, so we think Afghanistan are good value to take the spoils here.

England v Australia

England’s upsetting defeat to Ireland will be fresh in their mind as they head into this highly-contested rivalry with Australia. The Ashes has fuelled this derby for since 1882 and it promises to be one of the most hotly contested matches of the world cup.

The Aussie’s cruised to victory against Sri Lanka, the Baggy Greens held Sri Lanka to a score of 157/6 through all their overs and managed to chase that score down with seven wickets remaining and 21 balls left. Marcus Stoinis was the stand out performer in that game, hitting 59* off 18 balls which left him with a strike rate of 327.78. He managed 50 in just 16 balls, the fourth fastest half-century in International T20 history.

The last nine games played between the two (most recent had no result) since 2018 have resulted in six wins for England and three for Australia. Two of Australia’s three wins came on home soil with other at the Rose Bowl in Hampshire. Three of England’s six were also at home whilst two of the others came in Australia. The final win came at a neutral venue in the Super 12 last year when England won by eight wickets.
