England v India Preview – 2nd T20

India proved too strong for England in the opening T20, and despite missing the likes of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, others managed to star, not least Hardik Pandya who’s quick-fire half century off just 30 deliveries helped his side post a competitive total of 198. The absences of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow were extremely apparent in England’s batting attack, and that decision to rest them may again prove costly in this second T20.

That victory now means it’s 17 wins from India’s last 19 T20s, a run dating back to the World Cup at the end of last year, while this England side are on a poor run of six defeats from eight in that same time frame. An argument to why that is could lie in the stats themselves, with India having played over twice as many T20 matches than their hosts in this series, and that regular playing time will insure they’re a more cohesive unit at this point in time.

Jos Buttler had a poor first outing as skipper, being bowled for a golden duck and getting his side’s run chase off to the worst possible start. Dawid Malan looked to press on as Jason Roy struggled, though when the number three was bowled, and Livingstone was caught behind trying to be too cute, the match was all but over.

The visitors didn’t give England a sniff in the opener, and there’s little to suggest this won’t be a very similar story. With that said, very little went England’s way in Southampton, and that’s unsurprising considering they haven’t played in this format for a while.

Buttler’s batting innings couldn’t have been worse, though he’s one of the best players in the world in this format and has proven that in the IPL over the last 12 months, while Livingstone’s poor decision making let him down last time out and we’d expect a more complete display from both of them.

Buttler has hit 15 T20 half centuries for his country, and we’re inclined to put his Southampton innings down as an anomaly and, if anything, we’d expect it to spur him on here so he’s our pick for highest scoring batsman for the hosts.

With that said, it’s hard to see how England go in as favourites. While the wicket may suit them more than the last did, they’ve still only won three of their last 11 matches with India, and they’re currently looking to stop a run of four successive defeats in that head-to-head.

While we’d expect this game to be closer, the value certainly still lies with the visitors.
