England v India Preview – 1st ODI

With the T20 series in the bag, India look to claim the ODI series when they take on England in the first of three games starting at the Oval. Both sides are packed with world-class quality and England will have to be at their very best if they are to get revenge. Check out our preview to what should be a thrilling opening clash between the two sides.

Recent Form

India took the T20 series 2-1 to continue their excellent run in the format, though in truth there were some big names missing for both sides, with KL Rahul out for the series and Virat Kohli only coming in for the final match with the series already wrapped up.

Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Ben Stokes were three of the main names missing for the hosts, and all are back in the squad for this clash.

The T20 series result wasn’t at all a surprise with the Indians being the undisputed best T20 side in the world at the moment, though it’s certainly not so clear cut in ODI’s. India are currently fourth in the rankings and although that’s often not the best indicator, their away form is telling. This India side have now lost nine of their last 12 away ODI outings, including each of the last four as they went down 3-0 over in South Africa earlier in the year.

England on the other hand have won each of their past eight ODIs, and even though three of those came against Netherlands this year, home whitewashes over Sri Lanka and Pakistan are no mean feat even if they were favourites in each.

They lost their last two series 2-1 before that, at home to Australia and away against India themselves, though there’s a different feel and attitude to this England side at the moment as they look to hold one of the most in form batting line-ups in world cricket.

England To Win

India don’t have a poor record here to contest with, and although they lost their last ODI series over in England 2-1 back in 2018, they won their previous one in 2014 3-1. On both of those occasions India took the opening match of the series, though that’s not exactly the basis of a winning bet here necessarily.

England have won their last six ODIs at the Oval, coming against five different sides and while India have won three of their last five matches here, none of those were actually played against England. The last time these two sides met here was over a decade ago with England running out three wicket victors back in September 2011.

Despite winning the T20 series, it looks like India will be up against it here. Virat Kohli is looking to return to form, though with the English batsmen on cloud nine at the moment, we’d expect this home crowd to drag them over the line.

ENGLAND TO WIN
