England v India Preview – 1st T20

England have seen a complete turnaround in their test side after an abysmal series in West Indies, with a 3-0 series victory over New Zealand and a mammoth run chase against India on Tuesday getting Ben Stokes’ captaincy off to a flying start. Attention now changes to the shorter version of the game, though with the aggressive mindset now instilled in this side, there shouldn’t be too much adjustment needed. Check out our preview to the opening T20 from the Rose Bowl between England and India.

Recent Form

The top two sides in the world go head-to-head again in a three-match series, though missing players will play a huge part here. Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid won’t be featuring here for the hosts, though equally Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are among the notable absentees for India and it’ll be interesting to see which side copes better.

In terms of international T20 cricket, England have had a long break. The last time they played was back in January, a 3-2 series defeat to the West Indies and that highlighted the weaknesses in this England side.

Prior to that, they fell at the semi-final hurdle in the World Cup having been favourites to lift the trophy, and without Stokes and Bairstow here to pull them through as they have done the test side, it’s difficult to see how the hosts are going to come up trumps.

While India also fell short in the World Cup, they have much more recent form to call upon. They recently beat Ireland 2-0, though anything less than that would have been disastrous considering the gulf in class between the sides, while they also drew their previous series 2-2 in South Africa.

Those two defeats were India’s only two in their last 18 T20 Internationals, and up against a somewhat makeshift England side, we’d hardly expect a third defeat in that run here.

While there’s very little to split the two in terms of head-to-head record, with the Men in Blue slightly leading that 10-9. India have also taken the last two T20 Series they’ve faced, including a 2-1 victory in England and despite missing a couple of their key players, they have extreme firepower remaining in the side in the form of Hardik Pandya, Sky Yadav and Deepak Hooda.

Ultimately it seems as though this side will have too much about them to not win the series, and on what looks to be a relatively neutral wicket, we’re happy to back the visitors to take a 1-0 Series lead.
