These two sides are coping with the demands of participation in Europe quite differently. Whereas Wolves are still in with a chance for a Champions League spot next season, especially given Man City’s predicament, Espanyol find themselves propping up the La Liga table with the worst defensive record in the division.
There has however been some improvement since Abelardo took the reins and in 2020 they’re a reasonable W3-D3-L2, including a pair of stalemates with top-five outfits Barcelona and Sevilla.
Still, with both defeats coming on their travels, Espanyol remain a very poor W1-D2-L6 on the road since late October when excluding lower league opponents in the Copa del Rey, with all but one of those defeats coming by at least two clear goals.
The Spanish side also have a problem in that £13.5m January signing Raul de Tomas is unavailable here, with the 25-year-old striker electric since joining from Benfica as he’s netted in all five matches for his new club.
We couldn’t back Wolves for the full three points on their own at such a skinny price though, with Nuno’s men winning just once in their last nine (W1-D4-L4).
It’s worth noting that this included three encounters with Man Utd, two with Liverpool and another with Leicester, but Wolves are looking a tad jaded having already played 42 games this season so far with a fairly small squad.
First Half Draw
We expect the visitors to dig their heels in a little and should Wolves go on to win this one, it could take them some time to make the breakthrough.
Espanyol have only trailed at half time once in their last five on their travels, while Wolves haven’t led at that point since early December, going D7-L7 at the break in the 14 matches since then.
In fact, 26 of Wolves’ 35 league goals this season have come after the half-time whistle, as did eight of their 11 strikes in the Europa League group stages.

It’s hard to make too much of Espanyol’s form in this competition, with serene progress through the qualifiers and play-offs followed by a fairly easy group featuring Ludogorets, CSKA Moscow and Ferencvaros.
A slight uptick in form isn’t entirely persuasive with their record on the road remaining so poor, and with home advantage, Wolves can put one foot into the Last 16 against opponents that will be more focused on retaining top-flight status than going on an improbable cup run in Europe.
