William Gallas Exclusive: Jesus A Great Signing For Arsenal

William Gallas has hailed Arsenal’s capture of Gabriel Jesus – but believes fellow Brazilian attacker Richarlison will have to bide his time at Tottenham. The Gunners were left short of centre-forward options when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left for Barcelona in January, while Alexandre Lacazette departed for Lyon earlier this summer. Eddie Nketiah signed a new contract with the club after impressing in the latter stages of last season, but a new addition was necessary and the North Londoners eventually moved for Manchester City star Jesus. Gallas feels the striker is worth the £45million Arsenal spent on securing his signature – and is confident he will do well at the Emirates.

Jesus A Great Signing

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “Alexandre Lacazette left and Aubameyang left as well so it was very important for Arsenal to sign a good striker.

“Gabriel Jesus has shown for many years what he can do with Man City.

“It was difficult for him to get into the starting XI, but he has quality, he's very strong and very intelligent when he plays football. I'm sure he's going to fit in the team.

“Signing Gabriel Jesus will give Arsenal a better opportunity to score goals and to be very dangerous in attack. It's a great signing.”

Patience Needed For Richarlison

Arsenal are not the only North London side to have purchased a Brazilian forward, however, with Tottenham shelling out £60million to acquire Richarlison from Everton.

But Gallas has warned Spurs fans not to expect too much too soon from the 25-year-old – as the presence of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min could mean his initial opportunities are limited.

“Richarlison has to adapt quickly into the system of Antonio Conte,” he explained.

“I don't think he's going to start games straight away because he is now at a new club, [with] new team-mates and he has Son and Harry Kane in front of him.

“Richarlison has to be patient and that is a problem with younger players sometimes, because they want to play straight [away] – and I think patience is the key to his success at Tottenham.

“If he comes on as a substitute and shows Conte what he can do then Conte will give him more playing time and more opportunities to be in the starting XI, because the season is very long.

“I think the second half of the season will see Richarlison start more games.”

Difficult To Split Arsenal And Spurs

And former Arsenal and Tottenham defender Gallas cannot split the two teams, ahead of 2022-23.

“It's always difficult at the beginning of the season to tell which London clubs are going to qualify for the Champions League or who's going to have the best opportunity to win the Premier League – because when we look at Tottenham and Arsenal, who have signed some good players this summer, I'd say it's 50/50,” he said.

“It will be very interesting to see which team will come out on top. Last season it was Tottenham because Antonio Conte did a great job, he's got that passion and he brought it to his players so that's why for the new season it will give Tottenham the chance to improve again.

“With Arsenal, it's another problem with Mikel Arteta. He's a young manager but for me, he failed last season because they didn't qualify for the Champions League. Now they have a new striker so we will see what will happen.”
