In 2016, shortly before his retirement, Arteta said: “My philosophy will be clear.
“I will have everyone 120% committed, that’s the first thing. If not, you don’t play for me.
“When it’s time to work, it’s time to work, and when it’s time to have fun then I’m the first one to do it, but that commitment is vital.
“Then I want the football to be expressive, entertaining. I cannot have a concept of football where everything is based on the opposition.
“We have to dictate the game, we have to be the ones taking the initiative, and we have to entertain the people coming to watch us.
“I’m 100 per cent convinced of those things, and I think I could do it.”
Speaking after his appointment as Palace head coach, Vieira said: “My hope is to get the best [out] of the players.
“What I really want is to put a philosophy in place that my players understand really well, so that when they go on the field they can express themselves.
“Because there is talent, and my responsibility will be to make that talent work well together.
“I want to see a team who is on the front foot. I want the team to score more goals, to have more shots on target than we used to, but at the same time to keep this kind of mental strength that the team has created in the last couple of years – to become even stronger.”
Form Under Arteta And Viera
Arteta looks set to guide Arsenal back into the top four for the first time since legendary boss Arsene Wenger stepped down in 2018. He has also won the FA Cup and Community Shield since being appointed in December 2019.
Vieira, meanwhile, has only been in the job since last summer. But he has also overseen an improvement from Palace’s stoic displays under Roy Hodgson last season.
The Eagles finished 14th last term with 44 points, scoring 41 goals and conceding 66.
In 29 games this year, 12th-placed Palace have already amassed 34 points, scoring 39 times and conceding 38 – a significant improvement at both ends of the pitch, aided by signings such as Michael Olise, Marc Guehi and Odsonne Edouard, who have contributed at both ends of the field.
Under Vieira’s tutelage, three Palace players were called into Gareth Southgate’s squad for the most-recent international break – Tyrick Mitchell, Guehi and loanee Conor Gallagher – further testament to the job the Frenchman is doing.
The former Gunners pair meet for the first time as managers at Selhurst Park, with Palace unbeaten in four league outings (two wins, two draws) and Arsenal having won six of their last seven in the competition (losing the other 2-0 to Liverpool).
Their long-term objectives may be different – Arsenal seeking to consolidate their top-four place and return to the Champions League, Palace chasing a top-half finish – but their immediate focus will be the same.
If Vieira auditions well enough, perhaps he will be considered for the position of Arteta’s successor when the day comes that the Spaniard moves on.
Either way, it will certainly be intriguing to see how the Gunners’ two former midfield generals fare against each other from the dugout.
