Recent Form

It’s crunch time for these two sides at the bottom of Group H and it’s hard to see either progressing without a win here. Sparta Praha will take encouragement from the 4-1 annihilation they inflicted at Celtic Park, though both sides arrive in poor form and this meeting could descend into a desperate scrap.

That victory in the reverse fixture is Sparta’s only positive result from their last five outings, losing the others to Lille, Milan, Viktoria Plzen and Ceske Budejovice.

They conceded at least three times in each of those defeats, with the 4-2 loss to the latter particularly concerning given the promoted outfit was yet to win a league game prior to that clash.

Over 3.5 Goals

Sparta Prague’s games regularly feature plenty of goals and 11 of their 12 outings since August have now featured a minimum of three, as over 3.5 goals landed on eight occasions and nine saw both sides register on the scoreboard.

In fact, four of their last five have breached that higher threshold, so goals should very much be on the agenda.

Celtic are no strangers to high-scoring affairs either, with Diego Laxalt’s late equalizer at Hibs this past weekend meaning that six of their last seven have now contained a minimum of four goals.

The Hoops’ defence has been porous, shipping at least two goals in six of their eight appearances since the October international break, yielding a poor W2-D3-L3 return.

Only Slovan Liberec (10) have conceded more goals in this season’s group stages than Celtic (nine), while Sparta Praha (eight) aren’t far behind.

Given the recent form of both teams, with two shaky backlines, we’ll certainly be getting behind goals here. Celtic ought to bounce back here, but away from home and with no consistency to speak of, we’ll swerve the match outcome entirely.

Sparta Prague’s victory at Celtic Park was made all the more impressive as it was delivered by a squad depleted by a combination of injury and Covid-19.

They’re still not at full strength, with Adam Hlozek, Libor Kozak and Dominik Holec still unavailable, but they do have Milan Heca, Filip Soucek, Matej Hanousek and Martin Minchev back in contention, even if they’re not all yet up to speed.

Celtic aren’t at full strength either and Neil Lennon will have to make do without Christopher Jullien, Mikey Johnston and James Forrest. Olivier Ntcham could come into midfield for Tom Rogic, while Albian Ajeti could make way for Odsonne Edouard, but the Hoops certainly have less concerns on the selection front overall.
