Southampton v Liverpool Preview And Predictions - Premier League Week 37

The door is slightly ajar for Liverpool after Man City were unable to secure victory over West Ham, though with Pep Guardiola’s side having been two goals down at the break, the Reds could have been in a better position. Nothing other than a pair of victories will do for Jurgen Klopp’s men from their final two games, while they must also hope that Man City slip up on the final day at home to Aston Villa. Although Liverpool have only scored more than twice in just one of their last seven matches in all competitions, it should be noted that they have faced the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, Villarreal (twice), as well as Merseyside rivals Everton, a resurgent Newcastle and Aston Villa. The Toffees are the only domestic side from that bunch beneath Southampton in the table, and Liverpool’s record against bottom-half sides has been highly impressive.

Indeed, the Reds have won 18 of 19 unbeaten clashes against such teams this season, leading at both half time and full time on 14 occasions – including seven of nine on the road.

They had no trouble achieving this over Southampton earlier in the season as they raced to a 3-0 lead heading into the break at Anfield, and this has been a pretty one-sided fixture in recent times.

Liverpool/Liverpool/ - HT/FT

Liverpool have won eight of nine head-to-heads since 2017/18, including four that came by either 3-0 or 4-0 scorelines. Given Southampton have trailed at the break in seven of their past 10 league games, it would be a surprise if Liverpool can’t make an early start before closing out the game.

Jurgen Klopp does have some injury headaches with Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah coming off injured in their FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea, while Fabinho is unlikely to be risked with the Champions League final around the corner.

However, those absentees shouldn’t hinder them from getting a result here, especially when considering the form Southampton are displaying at present.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men have recorded just the single victory from their last 11 appearances in all competitions, with as many as eight ending in defeat. This includes drubbings at home to Chelsea (6-0) and Man City (4-1), as well as on the road at Aston Villa (4-0) and Brentford (3-0).

Only Leeds, Watford and Norwich have conceded more goals than the Saints this term, so Mo Salah’s absence hardly seems pivotal to Liverpool’s chances at the sharp end here.
