Teddy Sheringham Exclusive: Kane Will Have A Better Chance Winning Silverware At Spurs Than United

Teddy Sheringham believes Harry Kane is more likely to win a trophy with Antonio Conte at Tottenham, than he would be if he left to join Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Kane turns 29 in July but has yet to win any silverware at Spurs, despite scoring 247 goals in all competitions for the club. However, United are enduring a trophy drought of their own – not winning anything since lifting both the League Cup and Europa League in 2016-17. And Sheringham feels the presence of Conte as head coach at Tottenham gives Kane a good reason to turn down any approach from the Red Devils – should it arrive – regardless of how tempting their proposal may be.

More Chance Of Silverware At Spurs

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “If you’re a United fan you’d wish that Kane joins.

“If Harry Kane made himself available, I think every club in the world would want him on their list.

“Manchester United are falling down the pecking order for big players, but having said that, they are still a massive club, they’re still a massive draw.

“If they do come calling, it’ll be hard to turn them down. Even if they’re not in any European competitions next season, it would still be a very tough thing to say no to Manchester United.

“I think it’s all about the managers that are going to be in charge and if you’re being led in the right manner.

“I think Ten Hag has a really tough job of steering the boat in the right direction being at Manchester United, I would say Tottenham have the better chance of winning trophies at the minute.

“I think Kane is more likely to win something at Tottenham with Conte in charge rather than at Manchester United at the moment.”

Kane Expected To Stay

Kane publicly attempted to force through a move to Manchester City last summer, before ultimately resigning himself to staying put in London.

But Sheringham does not believe the England captain will renew his efforts to leave in the upcoming transfer window.

“I think Kane will stay at Spurs,” he continued. “He looks happy again, just going on body language and what his demeanour is like in and around the place.

“He obviously had a four or five-month period where things were rocky but I see him back on form again now, enjoying his football, he looks like he’s happy to stay where he is.”

Backroom Recruitment A Priority

Regardless of whether Kane arrives at Old Trafford ahead of next season, Ten Hag’s task of restoring Manchester United to their former glories looks to be a monumental one.

However, rather than focusing on player recruitment, Sheringham thinks the Dutchman should prioritise his backroom staff and the dressing room atmosphere.

“The first thing I would do [if I was Ten Hag] is make sure to get my backroom staff in order,” he explained.

“Everybody needs to be in it together. You can’t have people not knowing what he wants and then trying to pass it on to the players. That’s the most important thing for me – backroom staff.

“I’ve been in unhappy dressing rooms, I’ve also been in good, united dressing rooms and it makes a huge difference if you’re constantly fighting for the wrong reasons.

“It’s good to have heated discussions if you sort things out but when there’s constant rivers of things behind the scenes, that’s not great.

“The whole place is a mess to me at the moment. It’s not just the players, it’s just flowing down from the top and it’ll hopefully be sorted out by Ten Hag.”
