Scotland v Ukraine Preview Nations League - Round 1

Scotland continue their Nations League campaign when they take on Ukraine at Hampden Park. Ukraine sit top of League B Group 1 on goal-difference ahead of Scotland, however the Scots will be looking for revenge after having their World Cup aspirations ended a few months back by the same opposition. Recent Form

Ukraine dealt a decisive blow to Scotland in their World Cup play-off last June, even if they didn’t make it to Qatar themselves following a defeat to Wales. However, that remains the war-torn country’s only defeat in 12 appearances since the Euros, as they enter this fixture with four victories from their past six games.

Scotland may only have lost twice in 12 outings themselves, but that record isn’t quite as impressive as a first glance would suggest. This spell featured wins over weaker outfits Moldova and Armenia twice each, as well as another over the Faroe Islands, with those victories over Armenia the only ones from their past six matches.

Most alarmingly, a 3-0 defeat to a gun-shy Ireland underlined that not all is well in defence. They only possess a single clean sheet across their past six fixtures now, with the Ukraine the other side to put three past them over this period.

1-1 Correct Score

The lack of firepower available to Steve Clarke also remains a concern. Scotland may have found the net in 11 of their past 12 fixtures, though only scored more than once in half of these despite a fairly kind fixture list.

Ukraine aren’t involved in too many high-scoring games, with just eight of their 23 matches since the start of 2021 featuring more than two goals over 90 minutes. Still, both teams scored in 15 of these games, as the 1-1 correct score landed on 10 occasions.

Both Teams To Score

Nine of Scotland’s past 13 matches have also seen fewer than three goals, and given the two sides here occupy the top two spots in their group, neither team has to go hell for leather to get the three points.

That’s especially the case with another meeting between the sides yet to come, while the visitors will probably prefer to open up less here than on neutral territory next week in Poland if necessary to top the group.

Ukraine Draw No Bet

Both teams have a few injury concerns. For Scotland, the headline absentee is Liverpool’s Andy Robertson, while centre-backs John Souttar and Liam Cooper are also unavailable to weaken the defensive options.

Ukraine are without defender Eduard Sobol and midfielders Mykola Shaparenko and Oleksandr Zinchenko, with the Arsenal man a huge loss. Still, Ukraine’s performances in recent times are enough to suggest that if one side is to come out on top then it should be them.
