Recent Form
Rangers produced quite a sensation in Dortmund last week, netting a quick fire double shortly before the break and stretching their lead further early in the second half, en route to what was in the end a comfortable 4-2 victory.
However, whereas the Gers couldn’t back that result up at the weekend, dropping two points away at Dundee United to allow Celtic to edge further away, Dortmund absolutely thrashed Borussia M’gladbach 6-0 to keep their own faint title hopes alive.
Dortmund have long been an ambitious side going forwards, even before Marco Rose’s appointment in the summer, so yet another insanely high-scoring affair comes as no surprise.
That gung-ho approach means that they’re nearly always all or nothing, with just a single stalemate from their past 46 fixtures going right back to the start of April.
Over 3.5 Goals
Although the German outfit typically find that they can outscore most opponents, they have been quite hit and miss since the start of November with a rather even W9-D1-L8 record.
Both teams scored in 14 of these 18 matches, while all but one featured at least three goals in total. In fact, two thirds of them saw a minimum of four goals, with seven of the past nine witnessing five or more.
Although Dortmund are quite capable of netting four times, fortunately for them, the away goals rule has been scraped this year and so the task ahead is more manageable.
Crucially, they’ll be hoping to have star man Erling Haaland back for this fixture, though whether the Norwegian stats from the off after a month out remains to be seen.
Either way, Dortmund have other weapons and chasing a two-goal deficit, there’s hardly any chance of Rangers registering a 10th consecutive home clean sheet under Giovanni van Bronckhorst here.
Sparta Prague, Hearts, Hibernian and Dundee Utd are the best teams Ibrox has played host to over this period, and Dortmund are a different animal completely.
Rangers To Win
The visitor’s great Achilles heel is undeniably their porous backline, conceding at least twice in six of their past nine appearances.
Given they have no choice but to stick to their brazen approach there will certainly be opportunities for Rangers to get at them on the break, and coupled with their form in recent months, leaves the hosts looking like better value.
