Rangers v Celtic Preview And Predictions - Scottish Cup Semifinals

All eyes will be on Hampden Park on Sunday when Rangers and Celtic clash in the semifinals of the Scottish Cup. Following their 2-1 loss to their bitter rivals in the League a few weeks back, Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be well aware of the fact that the Scottish Cup is now their best chance of any silverware this season. Celtic hold the momentum and a six-point advantage in the title race, but that may count for little here with the Scottish Cup representing Rangers’ best chance of silverware this season.

However, the Gers do play in Europe on Thursday, whereas Celtic will be fresh after enjoying the week off, so Ange Postecoglou’s men are understandably favourites ahead of this semi-final.

Both sides enjoyed big wins at the weekend, albeit against relatively weak opposition, with Celtic annihilating St. Johnstone 7-0 on Saturday and Rangers cruising to a 4-0 win over St. Mirren a day later.

Celtic To Win And Under 3.5 Goals

Although both possess a healthy attacking output, that doesn’t mean the goals will necessarily fly in here, with 10 of 15 Old Firm derbies since 2018/19 featuring fewer than three goals, as at least one side or the other failed to score in 10 of these too.

Rangers dominated this fixture last term as they won four of five unbeaten head-to-heads, but while they won the first Old Firm derby this season, that came back in August during a difficult patch for Celtic.

The Hoops were adapting to Postecoglou’s methods at that point and were still adding to their squad, and they’ve won the two subsequent Old Firm derbies as they thumped Rangers 3-0 at Parkhead and eked out a 2-1 win at Ibrox.

Celtic To Win Either Half

Celtic are aiming for a fifth domestic treble in six seasons and they enter this clash unbeaten in 33 matches domestically, winning 29, while they’ve conceded just two goals across the last seven such games. Rangers are W17-D4-L2 in domestic games under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, though of course both defeats were inflicted by Celtic.

Although Kemar Roofe will have had his confidence boosted by a hat-trick at St. Mirren last week, there’s no escaping the fact that he would be on the bench for Rangers if Alfredo Morelos was available.

Celtic have had to make do without their own star frontman over recent months with Kyogo Furuhashi struggling for fitness, but the Japanese sensation returned off the bench last weekend, while the Hoops benefit from their squad depth after some excellent recruitment both in the summer and in January.
