Newcastle v Chelsea Preview And Betting Tips – Premier League Week Nine

The international break would have come as a rude interruption for Frank Lampard and his team considering the momentum they were starting to build. Chelsea come into the early Saturday Premier League clash with Newcastle unbeaten in their last eight across all competitions and more importantly have dropped just four points from a possible 18 in their last six league games. Tipsters Form Labs guide you to where the value lies with their betting preview and tips for the opening game of week nine of the Premier League.

Recent Form

The first match back from the international break sees Steve Bruce’s Newcastle side host an in-form Chelsea outfit.

This has often been the banana skin fixture for the Blues, as the Magpies have gone an astonishing W5-D1-L1 since 2012/13 in this clash, including a 1-0 victory over Frank Lampard’s side last season so this is by no means a foregone conclusion.

In fact, Chelsea have only won this fixture four times in 16 years, and they’ll be desperate to improve that record on Saturday.

Newcastle have had a rollercoaster start to the season and are yet to record back to back results in the league as consistency has ben hard to come by going W3-D2-L3.

Interestingly, two of those defeats came at home to Brighton and Man United, neither of whom have had a flying start to the campaign, though their 2-1 victory over an in-form Everton certainly raised a few eyebrows.

While results have been hard to predict, the hosts have been scoring goals pretty regularly and have netted in nine of 11 matches across all competitions this season, including six in their last three at St. James Park.

Their record at home against the top six last season under Bruce was as balanced as you might expect, going W2-D1-L3, though again they scored at a regular rate netting in five of those six matches and we’re inclined to back them to score again.

Chelsea To Win And Both Teams To Score

While Chelsea will be wary of their record at this ground, they’ll still be full of confidence based on recent form.

They’ve only lost once in 13 matches across all competitions this season, with that coming against Liverpool when playing the second half with 10 men and have now won four on the bounce.

They’re the league’s top scorers with 20 from eight games, scoring three or more on six occasions and there’s no reason to suggest they can’t keep up that scoring record here.

The Blues are six points better off this season than they were from the corresponding fixtures last term, showing the impact the likes of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech have had going forward, while Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy have made the world of difference at the back and on that basis we’re inclined to get behind the visitors to improve their record here.

Ben Chilwell will likely miss out here as even if he can feature, Lampard won’t want to risk him with a sting of tricky games coming up, though with Marcos Alonso, Emerson or even Cesar Azpilicueta able to fill in that shouldn’t be detrimental to their chances.

While Chelsea have looked solid at the back recently, both teams to score has come off in six of Newcastle last seven matches across all competitions, and because the netted in five of those six matches against the top six last year, the match results and both teams to score holds some weight.
