A statement was made by Manchester Utd on Sunday night when they came from behind to beat Liverpool at Old Trafford in the FA Cup fourth round.
Of course, Jurgen Klopp’s men have been struggling for any sort of form of late, going W1-D3-L3 since Christmas, scoring in just three, as their solitary win came against Aston Villa’s U23s in that same cup competition.
The plaudits should still all go Man Utd’s way though, with them currently sitting at the head of the Premier League table prior to this gameweek, and looking extremely confident.
Man Utd -1 Handicap
If there was a time this season so far you wouldn’t want to face Sheffield Utd, it would be now. Having lost 16 of their opening 18 matches across all competitions when including extra time and penalties, they have since won three of their last four outings.
However, two of those wins came against lower league sides Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup, while the other was over a completely out of touch Newcastle outfit who were missing key players.
The Blades have lost all 14 matches against sides above the bottom-six on the league so far this term, and we highly doubt that is going to change against a team oozing with confidence.
Moreover, they failed to score in eight of those while the last three such games on the road have all seen them lose out by two or more strikes.
Man United To Win 3-0
By contrast, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have won 11 of their 12 matches against the bottom-six in the table since the start of 2020, winning by at least three strikes in half of them, and that could well be on the cards again.
27% of those wins also finished exactly 3-0 and that scoreline looks to hold some value for us in this one, especially considering that was the case in their last meeting here with Chris Wilders’ men, while Sheffield Utd have lost by that exact score in a quarter of their last 12 road defeats.
Man Utd have conceded just two goals from their five league encounters since their 1-0 victory over Wolves at the end of 2020, and that is enough evidence to suggest this defence can keep yet another clean sheet.
The main worry for the Norwegian manager at the minute will be the fitness of star striker Marcus Rashford. He hobbled off at the weekend and is due to have a scan on his knee.
The hosts without their talisman starting don’t tend to struggle too much though, winning five of their last six unbeaten outings in his absence from the starting team dating back to last season, including a 2-0 victory over their Manchester rivals towards the end of last season.
With Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial they have respectable replacements, and we wouldn’t expect their performance against a much weaker side to be diminished.
