Manchester United v Nottingham Forest Preview – Premier League Week 17

Manchester United get their festive Premier League campaign underway when they take on Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Both sides come into the game off the back of convincing wins in the last 16 of the EFL Cup, Forest knocking out Spurs with a 2-0 win, while United accounted for Burnley by the same scoreline. Recent Form

Substantial victories in the League Cup is exactly what both Erik Ten Hag and Steve Cooper would have wanted after a lengthy break owing to the World Cup. Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford were on the scoresheet for the Red Devils in their comfortable 2-0 home win over Burnley, and despite a likely change up of personnel for this one, Ten Hag will be hoping his side can put in an equally competent performance.

Forest tore through a tough Blackburn side with a 4-1 victory away at Ewood Park. Brennan Johnson was in inspiring form, and has potentially earned himself a start here at Old Trafford, and could cause some problems in what will be a makeshift United defensive line. Lisandro Martinez and Rafael Varane are late back from international duty having featured in the World Cup final, while Harry Maguire is a doubt with through illness and Diogo Dalot also is nursing a hamstring complaint so may not be risked.

Man United To Win And Both Teams To Score

That suggest value in Forest at least finding the net here, as Martinez is yet to miss a game since his arrival, while United have conceded just 1.11 goals per game in the 28 matches Varane has started since the start of last season, a figure that increases a massive 73% to 1.92 goals per game in the 24 that he’s not taken to the field from the off.

Cooper’s men have now gone W4-D2-L1 from their last seven in all competitions, with their only defeat coming away to league leaders Arsenal in that time. That run includes home wins over Liverpool and Spurs as they look to turn a corner this season, though to do so they’ll need to pick up their shaky away form. Indeed, they’ve picked up just one point from a possible 21 on the road in the league this year, and what’s more startling is the fact that they’ve only scored a single goal in that run (1-1 at Goodison Park). While that would perhaps suggest a win-to-nil for United, their lack of defensive options coupled with forest’s upturn in form suggest the visitors could nab one here.

United have won five on the bounce at Old Trafford now across all competitions, and in the league alone they overcome all of Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and West Ham, while they’ve also earned a draw with the Magpies. We’d expect them to come up trumps here and claim another important victory in their quest for a Champions League spot, though it may not be plain sailing and we’ll couple the home win with both teams to score.
