Recent Form

This promises to be an electric Manchester derby, with both sides in a rich vein of form at the moment. Man City were dumped out of the League Cup in midweek by Southampton, though it should be noted Pep Guardiola fielded a noticeably weaker side than usual, perhaps with one eye on this clash. The defeat means the League Cup will be lifted by a side other than Man City for the second successive season, the last time that happened was back in 2012/13.

Prior to that defeat, City were on a run of W9-D2-L1 going back to a defeat at Anfield in mid-October, and it’s a key trait of Guardiola’s side that they tend to bounce back from defeats very well. Indeed, they haven’t lost back-to-back matches since the beginning of last season, while under Guardiola they’ve only managed to record successive defeats on five occasions across all competitions, so we’d certainly expect some sort of response.

United eased past Charlton on Tuesday, with a late Marcus Rashford double sealing a 3-0 win. The England forward has been in scintillating form since returning from the World Cup and you get the feeling that if the Red Devils are to get anything from this game, he’ll be at the heart of it. After a slow start to the season, Eric Ten Hag’s men have had a resurgence and are currently on a run of eight successive victories across all competitions.

A victory here would put them just one point behind their City rivals, though despite some impressive victories scattered throughout the season, Fulham were the toughest team they faced with seven of the eight sides either currently in the bottom-half of the Premier League table or in a lower league, so this will be their biggest test so far.

Over 2.5 Goals

The reverse fixture earlier in the season finished a convincing 6-3 to City, with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both netting hat-tricks. It’s not inconceivable that a similar scoreline take place here, though with United’s newfound confidence in front of goal we’d expect a closer contest, though it’s hard to envisage a low scoring contest.

Indeed, only against Newcastle have Man United failed to score at home domestically this season, while they’ve average three goals per game across their last six outings at Old Trafford. While City are a better side than any of those six, they have shown defensive frailties at times this season, failing to keep a clean sheet in eight of their last 10 outings across all competitions.

There have been 14 goals in total across the last two head-to-heads alone. There’s an array of attacking talent on the pitch and with Rashford and Haaland namely in fine fettle, goals are very much on the cards.

Over 2.5 goals has landed in five of United’s last six home outings, with Ten Hag’s men scoring 18 of the 21 goals in that run. City have netted in all but one of their domestic outings this season, so the overs line looks well priced.
