Manchester United v Everton Preview – FA Cup 3rd Round

With five losses from their last seven games Everton come into their FA Cup 3rd clash with Manchester United in terrible form and with manager Frank Lampard staring down the barrel as the bookies favourite to be the next manager sacked. United on the other hand have six consecutive wins on the domestic front and in the sort of form that should see them make it seven on Friday night. Recent Form

Demarai Gray may have netted a late consolation penalty when Everton hosted Brighton on Tuesday night, but the Seagulls were already four goals up inside an hour as the damage was already done. Frank Lampard is under increasing pressure with his side just W1-D2-L8 across all competitions now, as they’ve scored more than a single goal in just one of those fixtures and drew a blank on five occasions. The 44-year-old might not even still be in the hot seat by the time this fixture comes around, though should someone else replace Lampard, they won’t be inheriting a great situation.

Everton possess a particularly poor record on their travels where they’re a pitiful W2-D7-L17 in the league since September 2021. They may have only lost five of 12 since May, though aside from an unexpected point picked up at the Etihad on New Year’s Eve, they lost to the other top sides they faced (Arsenal 5-1, Tottenham 2-0 and Newcastle 1-0). They’ve netted just once cross their past five league trips now, so the prospects of an away goal here appear slim.

Man United To Win To Nil

Whereas Everton are finding clean sheets hard to come by, Man Utd are yet to concede since the World Cup. Championship leaders Burnley were taken down in the League Cup (2-0), before top-flight victories over Nottingham Forest (3-0), Wolves (1-0) and Bournemouth (3-0). All but one of these fixtures were at Old Trafford, where they’ve now won eight of nine unbeaten games in all competitions and registered eight clean sheets to boot.

In the league alone, the Red Devils are a reasonably impressive W11-D2-L2 since an early campaign defeat to Brentford, with three of the four teams they’ve dropped points against Man City, Newcastle and Chelsea. Limiting this sample to bottom-half sides alone, United have won to nil in six of eight encounters.

Marcus Rashford To Score Anytime

Given Everton have conceded at least twice in five of the last six in all competitions, United’s goalscorers will fancy their chances of growing their tallies here.

Marcus Rashford stands out as the best pick, having scored in each of their four games since the World Cup. His form last year helped him to a spot on the England plane and he managed three goals in Qatar, as the 25-year-old appears to have rediscovered his spark.
