A late Cristian Pulisic winner sunk West Ham at the weekend to give Chelsea some breathing space in the battle for the top four. The Blues now sit five points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand, and a victory here would all but seal Champions League football for Thomas Tuchel’s men next season.
Man United are in no such position are successive defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal meaning they’ve now only won two of their last 10 matches across all competitions, with their hopes of top four all but over now.
To show how far United have fallen, they’ve not managed to win three successive matches in all competitions for over a year now, and that lack of consistency has really seen them pay the price. They looked bereft of ideas against Arsenal, though if it weren’t for a missed Bruno Fernandes penalty, the game could have gone a completely different direction.
Neither side are firing on all cylinders at the moment though on balance of play in recent outings it’s hard to see how United are going to come up trumps here. Chelsea were poor by their standards against a weakened Hammers outfit, though they still came up trumps and that’s a strong characteristic of the Tuchel era so far.
For how poor United have been at times in recent years, Chelsea haven’t beaten the Red Devils in the league since 2017. For context, Alvaro Morata was the only goal scorer on that day as Antonio Conte’s blues saw off Jose Mourinho’s United outfit, showing just how long it’s been since Chelsea have claimed three points over the Manchester side.
Over 2.5 Goals
On form this season, you’d give Chelsea the edge, especially when considering only Man City (39) have picked up more points on their travels than Tuchel’s charges (36) so far this campaign, though the head-to-head record throws up some doubt over that outcome, with each of the last three meetings ending all square.
While Chelsea have been defensively sound for the most part under current management, they’ve conceded a flurry of goals in recent weeks and that’ll largely be down to both fatigue and a deepening injury list.
Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Reece James are all doubts for this clash, while Ben Chilwell remains out for the season with Thiago Silva their only stalwart defender 100% available. Luke Shaw is the only defensive absentee for the hosts, though their defensive woes continue and we could be in for a high scoring encounter.
Chelsea have seen an average of 4.5 goals per game since the international break, and in their last three away games alone this rises to 4.7, with the blues netting 13 times across those three outings.
Similarly, United have seen an average of 4.3 gpg across their last three outings, conceding nine times in total against Norwich, Liverpool and Arsenal, so an overs bet here looks to be the right play.
