It’s always hard these days to know which version of Man Utd are going to turn up. Their last two fixtures have seen them win 4-0 and 1-0 at Old Trafford versus Norwich and Wolves respectively, but they’re never far away from an altogether less inspiring performance.
Having said that, the Red Devils have typically reserved their best performances for when facing the better teams this term, as against the current top eight in the table, they’ve gone W6-D4-L1 across all competitions.
You certainly know what you’re going to get from Liverpool and victory over Spurs last weekend means that they’ve won an incredible 20 of 21 unbeaten league outings this season.
However, the exception did come against Man Utd themselves, and although the Reds are stronger performers at Anfield, United’s record in the big games this season leaves us uncomfortable touching the match outcome.
One thing that has been noticeable in recent head-to-head clashes has been a lack of output. Since January 2016, eight of 10 meetings across all competitions have seen fewer than three goals, including four of five at Anfield where three of them saw one strike or less.
Given Liverpool have won their last four outings in all tournaments by either 1-0 or 2-0 scorelines, including home ties with top-half outfits Wolves and Sheffield Utd in the league, as well as rejuvenated Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup, we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this one follow the familiar pattern.

The prospect of this game going ‘unders’ is boosted by a back injury to Marcus Rashford. The England international has featured in 13 matches since the start of December, starting 11 of them and scoring nine goals.
His absence should also affect their other most potent weapon in the final third, Anthony Martial, as the two have struck up a great on-field relationship over the past few seasons.
Both sides also have good news surrounding their backlines. For United, Harry Maguire appears to have defied original predictions of an extended lay-off for a hip problem.
He only missed one match and came through their last two outings unscathed as United kept clean sheets in both. The game he missed was an FA Cup clash with Man City, which was incidentally the only one of those aforementioned 11 fixtures against top-eight sides (W6-D4-L1) that United lost.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp can welcome back centre-backs Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, as well as midfield enforcer Fabinho.
Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson have proved able deputies, but the hosts will be glad to have their first choice picks in those roles back in contention, even if they’re not ready to go from the off.
