Hungary v England Preview And Predictions - Nations League Round One

England kick-off their Nations League campaign when they take on Hungary at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest on Saturday. One expects Gareth Southgate will be looking at this Nations League campaign as the perfect build-up to fine-tune his squad ahead of the World Cup later this year, however with the Jubilee celebrations in full swing, delivering an opening win will be very much part of the agenda. Hungary only managed fourth in their World Cup qualifying group and despite being only three points behind Poland in second they failed to qualify for Qatar in November.

They’ll have been bitterly disappointed to have finished behind Albania, whose best player is Armando Broja (Chelsea) or Elseid Hysaj (Napoli), and although it was only a one-point gap between the two national teams, the Leipzig trio of Peter Gulacsi, Willi Orban and Dominik Szoboszlai really ought to have come out on top over eight matches.

England went unbeaten in their qualifying group (W8-D2) and showed how ruthless they can be when the team plays as a collective unit instead of stars trying to make their impact on the game, akin to England’s Golden Generation.

Over England’s ten qualifying games they only conceded three goals (two to Poland and one to Hungary) whilst their attacking play produced 39 goals, albeit 15 of those strikes were scored against San Marino.

The two matches that these sides played against each other resulted in a draw (1-1) and a thrashing by England (4-0). One of the odd things about these two games is that the 1-1 draw was at Wembley when England had a stronger side than the previous meeting when they won 4-0 at the Puskas Arena, showing t his Hungary side can pose a threat at times, as they certainly proved in the Euros.

Fikayo Tomori, Jarrod Bowen and James Justin are the latest call ups to the England national side with Justin and Bowen being the two only uncapped players, we’d expect Bowen to at least get a run out in Hungary and could possibly start after a fantastic year for West Ham.

Tomori has just won the Serie A with AC Milan and played an integral role all year round, and could prove critical for England going forward, though it should be registered that Southgate will likely use this competition to rotate his squad and find the best possible combination for Qatar, so they may not be all guns blazing here.

England To Win And Over 2.5 Goals

Justin is a strange one, the current assembled side has four traditional right-backs (Walker, Trippier, James and Alexander-Arnold) and other defenders who have the ability to play in this position like Ben White who has already featured at right-back in an England shirt.

Justin missed 33 Premier League games in a row after a cruciate ligament injury last year and has only managed 997 minutes across the 13 games this season and whilst he was good, he didn’t seem to stand out in a rather lacklustre Leicester side.

The five home games that Hungary played during the World Cup qualifiers at the Puskas Arena have been a mixed bag with a record that stands W2-D1-L2.

The two teams they beat were Andorra and San Marino which is certainly nothing to shout about, while they had a 3-3 draw with Poland and then lost to England (4-0) and Albania (1-0). Only one of these games had less than 2.5 goals and we’d expect this England side to prove their credentials with aplomb.

PREDICTION:

ENGLAND TO WIN AND OVER 2.5 GOALS
