Gus Poyet Exclusive: Top Four Not Realistic For Spurs

A Champions League spot is out of Tottenham Hotspur's reach this campaign – that's according to former Spurs star Gus Poyet. The North Londoners started 2021-22 strongly, but a poor run of form saw them slide down the table, ultimately costing manager Nuno Espirito Santo his job. The club acted quickly by appointing Antonio Conte on an initial 18-month contract to try and salvage their season, but Poyet can't see the Italian breaking into the top four come May.

Top Four Not Realistic

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “If you ask me if I see them getting into the top four, then the answer is no.

“Can they do it? Anything can happen because I don’t think there are too many teams that are really showing consistency apart from West Ham.

“I expect Man United to be better, they’ve got a decent squad.

“As for Tottenham, we don’t know what’s going to happen, it’s very difficult to say.

“Maybe in the beginning of the season we were expecting Leicester to be better but they are not close to challenging for the top four positions at the moment.

“I think the fourth position is there to grab for any team that is consistent because the top three is clear.

“At the beginning of the season it was all about Man United and if it was not Man United, it was Leicester.

“Now we have West Ham, which is a nice surprise – let’s see what Tottenham and Arsenal can do about their position as well.”

Excited About Conte Appointment

However, the Uruguayan – who made 98 appearances and scored 23 times for Spurs – is nonetheless excited by the appointment of the Serie A and Premier League winning coach:

“Yes, of course (I am excited),” he said.

“I was surprised because when they appointed José (Mourinho), I thought actually it was a reason to change the mentality and to make them more aggressive and to go and win trophies.

“And then when José left, which, in my opinion, I thought was quite early, there was Nuno, it looked like they were playing a similar style to José.

“I wasn’t expecting the next one to be Conte, but the people who run Spurs, I think they know better than me.”

Playing Under Conte

The former Juventus and Inter Milan boss rarely hides his passion, and Poyet has revealed that he would love to have played under a manager of his calibre:

“I think we would understand each other very well, no doubt,” he explained.

“Even with a look at each other, I would understand what he wants, exactly, and I would put it on the pitch, 100%.

“He would scare me with his fitness regime and running a lot – at my age now, even to go back and running – totally impossible!

“It’s funny, as a player I needed to train well to be fit enough, I had a love-hate relationship with the fitness coaches at my clubs – I hated them when they made me run, but I love them because I need it.

“During the suffering, you will look at them saying, “I hate you. You keep making me run and I want to kill you.”

“But when you went on the pitch at 3pm on Saturday and were running, jumping, getting to tackles and winning duels, you really love them because physically you can.

“So yes, he is a coach that I would have liked to have played under, no doubt, I would have loved it.”
