Glen Johnson Exclusive: Rashford, Sterling And Kane Should Start

Former England defender Glen Johnson has named Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane as his preferred Three Lions forward line for the World Cup. Sterling and Kane are regulars for the Three Lions, boasting 150 caps between them, while the latter wears the armband. Rashford, however, did not start a game at Euro 2020 and has not featured since then, missing out on a place for this round of fixtures despite Gareth Southgate naming a 28-man squad. The forward endured a difficult 2021-22 campaign, scoring just four Premier League goals, but he has netted three times in six outings this season and looks revitalised under new manager Erik ten Hag. Johnson feels Kane, who has scored six goals in just seven league matches, is a Golden Boot contender and should be flanked by Sterling and Rashford - but admits England are blessed with a wealth of talented forwards.

Kane, Rashford And Sterling Should Start

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “I can’t think of a better natural goalscorer right now than Kane. If England go far then he’ll probably win the Golden Boot.

“Harry Kane obviously has to start. So does Sterling. I’d probably go with Rashford as my third attacker.

“I’m a big fan of him and once he fully gets back to his best, he’s unstoppable.

“Sometimes when his confidence is down, he takes the easy option.

“He’s rapid, got a great strike on him, it’ll probably surprise people but I’d go for him.

“Rashford, Sterling and Kane would be my starting three at the World Cup, but you have incredible strength in depth.

“Someone else could choose a different front three and it would be hard to have any arguments.”

Door Still Open For Elliot

Another talented player to have missed out on a call-up is Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.

Former Reds defender Johnson is not surprised by the 19-year-old’s omission, but claims if the midfielder continued to impress, he may have a chance of making the plane to Qatar.

“I’m not surprised Elliott isn’t in the squad now but I definitely think he will be at some point in the future,” he said.

“I enjoy watching him. Every time he gets the ball it looks like something is going to happen. He’s a bit like Jack Wilshere, great in small spaces.

“If he carries on as he is now, blimey, he’ll be banging on the door for the World Cup.”
