Zurich v Arsenal

FC Zurich have traditionally struggled in European competitions and specifically in the Europa League where they have only managed to get out of the group stage once. Having failed to qualify for the Champions League, they came through two qualifying rounds to get here and achieved qualification by beating Hearts, 3-1 over 180 minutes.

Arsenal have started strongly but were handed their first loss at the weekend, a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United shows there is still some work to do on the domestic front against the better sides. The Gunners will most likely play a makeshift team for a lot of their Europa league fixtures and we expect to see a lot of new faces in this competition.

Arsenal have won all of their six games they’ve played against Swiss sides and have scored 14 goals whilst only conceding two, the most recent games were in the 2016/17 group stage of the Champions League when the Gunners beat Basel 2-0 at home and 4-1 on the road. Despite Zurich having a record of W2-L6 against English sides, none of these games were played in the 21st century so it doesn’t seem particularly relevant.

Zurich have had a shocking start to their Swiss League campaign, they are yet to register a win in their seven games so far (D2-L5). They only managed to score in three of those games (four goals in total) conceding 16 goals already. The Swiss side have lost three of their opening seven to-nil. By contrast, Arsenal have only lost to Manchester United and have beaten Palace and Bournemouth to nil.

Man United v Sociedad

It seems like the wheels are turning at Manchester United under the new reign of Erik ten Hag, a bad start meant that it was only going to be harder to get out of the hole they saw themselves in at the beginning of the season. They have now won four in a row, though there’s still work to be done if they want to achieve their domestic and continental goals.

Real Sociedad have seen mixed success at the start of their season. They have beaten Cadiz and Elche who finished 17th and 13th respectively, while their other games were against two of three powerhouses of Spanish football, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. A 4-1 loss at home to Barcelona is to be expected but a 1-1 draw with Atleti remains a decent a result. Alexander Isak has recently left the club for Newcastle and it is yet to be seen if anyone can fill the void that was left by their brightest star.

Despite losing their best attacker, they have still managed to score in all four Spanish league games so far. Sociedad failed to score in only eleven matches last year, out of a possible 49 games played in all competitions. To further this point, they only failed to score in five of their 19 away games last year (La Liga), these were against Sevilla (0-0), A Bilbao (0-4), Valencia (0-0), R Betis (0-4) and Espanyol (0-1).
