Emmanuel Petit Exclusive: Keep Nketiah Sign Abraham

Emmanuel Petit hopes Eddie Nketiah will stay at Arsenal – but believes his former club should also sign Roma striker Tammy Abraham. Nketiah’s contract expires at the end of this season and – while fresh terms have been offered – the striker is uncertain about accepting, with concerns over his playing time at the Emirates Stadium. The 22-year-old had played less than 200 minutes of Premier League football up until mid-April, having been used exclusively as a substitute in the competition. But he has since displaced Alexandre Lacazette and started the last five matches in succession, scoring four goals. And Petit is hopeful that this late flurry of starts will convince Nketiah to put pen to paper and sign an extension.

Nketiah Has Impressed

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “I hope [Nketiah is] going to stay. To be honest, he's made a big impression since he's played regular football with the team.

“He's also scored some important goals as well, in terms of performance, you can see he has improved on the pitch, as well as his team-mates.

“For me, he has a future at the club, just like [Emile] Smith Rowe, [Martin] Odegaard, [Bukayo] Saka, they're young players from the academy.”

Abraham Should Be Signed

However, with Lacazette looking likely to leave on a free transfer after a disappointing campaign, Petit feels Arsenal must bring in an additional centre-forward – and likes the look of England international Abraham.

“I don't know what Lacazette is going to do at the end of the season, but for sure, with Lacazette and Nketiah, they will still need a striker who can score goals, who can at least score 20 to 25 goals per season,” he explained.

“They need it to compete with the big guns as well, this is why I hope Nketiah is going to stay at the club.

“I hope he is going to stay but I hope Arsenal are going to buy a different kind of striker.

“I really like Tammy Abraham, he's still with Roma in Italy. He's a tall guy, physical, he can run fast, he has improved.

“The way he's playing with his team-mates as well, he's improved in terms of finishing, this is exactly what Arsenal need.

“He's a totally different player to Nketiah and this is why I think they need different options up front and to me, Abraham could be a very good bargain, especially after what happened at Chelsea.

“If you give him the opportunity to come back to England, especially in London, he will come back with a feeling of revenge.

“In a way, there are some similarities with [Romelu] Lukaku when he came back from Chelsea, he was looking for revenge. In football, I like that kind of thing. It's important mentally.

“For his quality as well in front of the goal, I think it could be a very good deal.

“I've heard big names as well, [Gabriel] Jesus, [Raheem] Sterling, I really like [Wilfried] Zaha, or even someone like [Allan] Saint-Maximin from Newcastle.

“[Gabriel] Martinelli is a very good player, just like Saka, but when they get injured, who's going to play on the left and right?

“There are no options, they need at least four players, at least two up front.”
