Newcastle For The Top Eight
Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “Nick Pope is a very good signing, but if I was Eddie Howe I wouldn't have looked at strengthening the goalkeeping department.
“Matt Targett is a good signing and there's probably two or three more coming. There's a lot of names floating around and we shouldn't forget that they finished in the top five or six in the second half of the season last year.
“I think Newcastle will finish in the top eight. Whether they can finish higher than that all depends on who else they bring in during the next few weeks.”
Champions League On The Horizon
The former Germany international added: “Newcastle have a lot of potential and with the funds they have available now, everyone expects them to be in the Champions League in the next three to five years.
“Nick Pope has probably signed expecting to play in the Champions League with Newcastle so I'm not surprised that he chose to sign for them.”
Newcastle are likely to bring in further recruits over the coming weeks, with Hamann keen for them to add quality at the back, out wide and up front before the transfer window closes.
“[They need to strengthen] Defensively – Newcastle have been solid with their recruitment,” he explained.
“[Bayer Leverkusen forward] Moussa Diaby would've been a great signing for them because he's got plenty of pace, he can create a chance out of nothing and he's a very good finisher.
“Newcastle need to sign a winger with pace and they need someone who puts goals away, because they haven't got an out-and-out striker who scores goals and that's the position they need to look at strengthening.”
Raphinha On The Radar
One name being linked is Leeds star Raphinha – though Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are reportedly also keen on the Whites’ Brazilian winger.
However, Hamann believes his old side could compete for a player of that ilk.
“Newcastle have the pulling power to sign Raphinha ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham,” he stated.
“If both Arsenal and Spurs are in for him and Newcastle also want him then I think he'll seriously consider going to Newcastle, because it looks like good things will happen in the next few years.”
The Magpies may also need to sign a central midfielder, after Isaac Hayden’s move to Norwich City this summer – a deal Hamann was not expecting.
“I'm surprised Isaac Hayden has dropped to the Championship with Norwich City but, at the same time, Newcastle probably advised him to do so,” he said.
“I think Norwich will have the aim to get promoted again next season so I think the move down to the Championship can really galvanise Hayden's career.”
