Didi Hamann Exclusive: Liverpool Must Beat Man City

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes the Premier League title race will be over if Jurgen Klopp’s men lose to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on April 10. The second-placed Reds find themselves just six points behind league leaders City, but with a game in hand on their title rivals, Hamann does not think his old club need to win all of their last 12 fixtures – however, he feels they must claim victory over the Citizens, in order to leapfrog their opponents.

Liverpool Need To Win Over City

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “I don’t think [Liverpool need to win all their remaining Premier League games].

“If you look at the games they’ve got left, there are some hard games, but they are winnable.

“Liverpool probably have to beat City at the Etihad. If Liverpool get beat at the Etihad, I think it’s all over. I don’t think 10 games is enough to make up six points on City.”

He added: “I don’t think that either team is going to win the last 10 or 12 games like they did two years ago when they went head-to-head and they kept winning all those games. I don’t think that will be the case this season.”

Use League Cup Win As A Springboard

Liverpool lifted the League Cup on Sunday after beating Chelsea on penalties – and Hamann is hoping the Reds can use their victory as a springboard for even more silverware this term.

The former German international was part of a Liverpool squad that won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in the 2000-01 campaign, but is hoping the Merseysiders’ current crop can claim a treble of more significant trophies.

“Ours [in 2001] was called the baby treble,” he recalled. “I would have rather won the treble they might win this season with the Champions League and the League, not the UEFA Cup and the FA Cup.

“In the Champions League, I thought Bayern Munich might have a chance, but they have two injuries now in [Joshua] Kimmich and [Alphonso] Davies – and they may not come back for the season. Without those two, Bayern won’t win the Champions League.

“City and Liverpool, you’ve got to say they’re as good as qualified with the results they had in the first leg. I find it hard to find anyone that can beat them over two legs.

“I think if these teams can avoid each other, there’s a very good chance that they’re going to face each other in the final.

“In the league – Liverpool were so impressive against Leeds and they’ve still got to go to the Etihad. Liverpool’s record there is not the best, but I wouldn’t rule them out.

“City had a great run with 15 games unbeaten. Liverpool are good enough to do that from now till the end of the season.

“The way [Liverpool] beat Inter the other day [in the Champions League], they didn’t really play particularly well, but they don’t concede, and they’ve got an outstanding goalkeeper.

“[Virgil] Van Dijk seems to be back to his best, [Ibrahima] Konate was outstanding, I just have a feeling that they will peak at the right time.”
