Recent Form

Both of these sides have enjoyed good pre-seasons with Arsenal winning all five games, culminating in highly impressive 4-0 and 6-0 wins over Chelsea and Sevilla respectively, while Palace have only lost two of nine games, with these defeats inflicted by Liverpool and Man Utd.

The Eagles haven’t been goal shy either having put five past Millwall, four past both Ipswich and Montpellier, as well as plundering three against Gillingham and QPR.

Both Teams To Score

Palace certainly became a more attacking outfit under Patrick Vieira last term, introducing other threats to alleviate the burden on talisman Wilfried Zaha. However, with opponents having to also pay attention to the likes of Michael Olise and Connor Gallagher, Zaha actually produced his best-ever goal tally with 14 league strikes, even if it did see the Ivorian only produce a single assist all campaign.

Gallagher may have returned to Chelsea, but a full pre-season appears to revitalized Eberechi Eze, and the club’s goalscoring record in pre-season would suggest they’ll continue to impress going forwards.

The Eagles should be match fit having played as many as nine pre-season games, but even if their first choice backline was rarely on display together, a record of just one clean sheet is a concern. That’s especially the case when considering Arsenal have bagged an average of four goals per game across fixtures with Nurnberg, Everton, Orlando City, Chelsea and Sevilla.

Gabriel Jesus First Goalscorer

The Gunners’ attack has of course been spearheaded by Man City purchase Gabriel Jesus, who contributed seven goals from those five matches, despite only playing 45 minutes in three of them and more than an hour just the once.

The Brazilian certainly looks to have the bit between his teeth, and having scored the first goal in three of the four games in which he scored during pre-season (from the point at which he came on or started), looks a tasty shout to get the first strike of the new campaign.

Over 3.5 Goals

There’s certainly good reason to think this could be a high-scoring encounter. Eight of 10 head to heads since 2017/18 have seen both teams register on the scoreboard, while there were a minimum of three goals on eight occasions, and at least four goals in seven.

There were at least three goals in 11 of Palace’s 16 encounters with the top eight finishers last season, while the Eagles found the net at least once in six of eight such home games.

Arsenal failed to register a clean sheet across their final six away days last term, conceding at least twice on four occasions, and with Palace looking very good going forwards and a bit shaky at the back, we’d expect this fixture to provide some considerable entertainment for the neutral.
