Burnley v Tottenham Preview - Premier League Week 13

After being downed midweek by little known Slovenian side Mura in the Europa Conference League, Antonio Conte would have realised that wholesale changes in the January transfer window is a must is he going to get Tottenham challenging for the top four. There is however plenty of football to be played before the window opens and the Italian will be looking at damage limitation with the resources at his disposal, beginning with Burnley on Sunday. Tottenham suffered their first defeat under Antonio Conte on Thursday as they suffered an embarrassing 2-1 loss to Slovenian outfit Mura, despite starting Harry Kane and bringing on Heung-min Son early in the second half.

However, they were hampered by Ryan Sessegnon’s red card just after half an hour into the game, while the majority of the side was composed by fringe players as the likes of Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele, Matt Doherty and Davinson Sanchez fluffed their chance of impressing the new man in the dugout.

Tottenham secured a narrow 1-0 win over Burnley a month ago in the League Cup and with the regulars set to return to the line-up, perhaps too much emphasis on the midweek defeat would be a mistake.

With victories over Vitesse and Leeds sandwiching a stalemate away at Everton across Conte’s first three games at the helm, Tottenham should bounce back with an improved performance here.

Burnley currently occupy a spot in the relegation zone, though they’ve actually lost the same number of games (five) as both Man Utd and Tottenham this season in league action, with only Crystal Palace drawing more games.

Spurs To Win

In all competitions, the Clarets have only lost twice across their past eight fixtures, as five ended in stalemates.

However, it’s worth noting that aside from the League Cup defeat to their opponents here, the other loss was inflicted by Man City, while five of the eight games saw them take on teams currently 10th or lower in the table.

Sean Dyche also has some key absentees ahead of this clash. Centre-back James Tarkowski and defensive midfielder Ashley Westwood will be suspended after picking up their fifth yellow cards of the season in the draw with Palace last weekend, while striker Ashley Barnes remains sidelined with injury.

They’re not without attacking threat however, with Chris Wood, Jay Rodriguez, Dwight McNeil and Maxwel Cornet all available.

Tottenham have won four of five unbeaten clashes with Burnley since 2019/20, registering clean sheets in each of those victories.

Another shutout can’t be relied upon here, especially with key centre-back Cristian Romero sidelined with a thigh injury, but they should have enough about them to secure a return to winning ways.
