Aston Villa v Burnley Preview And Predictions - Premier League Week 18

Burnley continue their fight for Premier League survival when they travel to Aston Villa on Thursday night. The Clarets sit 18th in the table, one point adrift of Leeds and a draw against Steven Gerrard's men will be enough to see them head into the final weekend out of the bottom three. Recent Form

The Villans are now sitting 13th after they missed an opportunity to go above Crystal Palace and Brentford in their latest match against the Eagles. Spectators had to wait until the 69th minute for the first goal in the game thanks to Ollie Watkins, though Palace’s Jeffrey Schlupp responded with a strike of his own to bring the match back to level pegging.

Burnley were unlucky to not get a draw out of their game against Tottenham. The game finished 1-0 after a Harry Kane penalty, though the Clarets will feel aggrieved by the decision that oculd ultimately result in their relegation back to the Championship.

This result means that they are currently one point behind Leeds who are just out of the relegation zone but the Clarets do have a game extra to try and leapfrog their relegation rivals and into safety with a result here.

These teams clashed earlier in the month which resulted in a 3-1 win for Aston Villa. The relegation battlers failed to get stuck into that game and just weren’t able to control the Villa attack.

Over 2.5 Goals

In recent history, this match has been a close-fought tussle with Villa just having an edge on their opponents, in the five games played since the 2019/20 season, the Villans have a record of W2-D2-L1. The only game Villa lost was away at Turf Moor (3-2) but the two home games played have both resulted in draws (2-2, 0-0) which could be a market to look out for.

There are six players out for this game, three for both sides, which includes some important defenders for Villa. Kourtney Hause and Ezri Konsa remain sidelined for now which means that Callum Chambers will make another appearance at centre-back.

For Burnley, Ashley Westwood seems the only key figure out with their defensive midfielder nursing an ankle injury after their game against West Ham a month ago.

Aston Villa have both scored and conceded 28 goals in their home games this year (3.11 match goal average) with 61% of their games finishing with over 2.5 goals.

Considering the position Burnley are in, we think this market is the way to go despite Burnley only having 39% of their games finish with over 2.5 goals.

This is because if Villa score the first goal (Burnley have conceded first in 61% of their away games), it will force Burnley to be more aggressive and push for a result which may either lead to a Burnley goal or Villa will punish them on the counter-attack with players like Ollie Watkins who has been in fine form recently.

PREDICTION:

OVER 2.5 GOALS
