Charity is a big winner at Sheffield casino fundraiser

A fundraising event compered by Sheffield Wednesday legend David Hirst at a city centre casino scored a big hit for autism charities.

Guests at the Genting Club Sheffield gave generously to raise £15,300 with the proceeds split between the National Autistic Society, the Autism Plus charity in Sheffield and the Autism Centre at Sheffield Hallam University.

The venue in St Paul’s Place hosted a sell-out lunch for 240 people followed by entertainment from a comedian and a singer, a speaker from the National Autistic Society and a prize draw.

It was organised by fundraisers John Tompkins and his daughter Alex Tunney, together with the event’s singer, Jamie Butler, whose six-year-old son Kieran has autism.

Casino General Manager Kath Barton said: “Everyone had a great time and David Hirst was a fantastic host. We were pleased to support this worthy cause and help the organisers raise such a significant sum.”

Genting sponsored the pre-lunch drinks reception, gave a £5 gaming chip to each guest and donated restaurant meals and other prizes for the charity prize. A number of guests stayed on afterwards to enjoy the casino’s hospitality and gaming experiences.

The National Autistic Society is the leading UK charity for people with autism, including Asperger syndrome and their families. It provides information, support and services and campaigns for a better world for people with autism. Autism Plus helps support adults and young people with autism, learning disabilities and mental health conditions.
