Denford Stakes Newbury Preview

The Group Two Hungerford Stakes is the feature race at Newbury on Saturday. It is supported by the Group Three Geoffrey Freer Stakes and the Denford Stakes, a Listed contest for two-year-olds over 7f. There are seven races in total from 1.20pm-4.45pm and the Racing Post previews the action.

1.20pm - Download The BetVictor App Handicap (1m2f)

FRANTANCK broke his maiden at the first attempt this season when he scored in a 1m contest at Goodwood. He then finished third at Newmarket behind a couple of smart horses from Charlie Appleby's yard. That form took a big boost when the runner-up scored at Ascot last time out.

William Haggas is having an excellent season this year and his colt does need to bounce back from a disappointing effort at Sandown on his handicap debut. The slow pace of that four-runner field did not help. With more horses in this field, he should have that issue on this occasion.

Definite has done little wrong in 2022. He was successful over this distance at Haydock two runs back. He then finished second at Nottingham. Ralph Beckett's gelding remains off a mark of 77 and he should go close once again.

Selection: Frantanck

Next Best: Definite

1.55pm - Denford Stakes (Listed, 7f)

Just five runners have been declared to run in the Denford Stakes, a Listed contest over 7f. All five of these two-year-olds are unexposed, however, the one who may have the biggest future is VICTORY DANCE.

Charlie Appleby's colt got off the mark at the first attempt at Newmarket back in June. He looked very professional on his debut, where he ran on strongly inside the final couple of furlongs.

The son of Dubawi stepped up in class for the Group Two Superlative Stakes last month. He finished just a head behind Isaac Shelby in second place in what was an excellent run. A repeat of that performance will make him hard to beat here.

Candle Of Hope is the biggest challenger to the Godolphin runner. She comes into the race with a 100% record, with victories at Newbury (6f) and Thirsk (7f). Richard Hughes' two-year-old enjoyed the step up 7f on her latest assignment, as she got better as that raced developed. There is likely to be more to come from the filly.

Selection: Victory Dance

Next Best: Candle Of Hope

2.30pm - BetVictor Geoffrey Free Stakes (Group 3, 1m5½f)

ZECHARIAH has yet to score this season, but he has produced two very good performances in group company. The pick of his results was his second-place finish in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot. He was unfortunate to lose a photo finish with Eldar Edlarov in that 1m6f contest.

Freddie and Martyn Meade's colt was not too far behind Deauville Legend in the Bahrain Trophy Stakes on his latest appearance at Newmarket. He is now taking on the older horses for the first time and he can take advantage of the weight allowance.

Away He Goes is the highest rated runner in this small field. The former Goodwood Cup runner-up is very consistent. He has not scored since September 2020, but a drop down to Group Three level gives him a good chance of returning to the winner's enclosure.

Selection: Zechariah

Next Best: Away He Goes

3.00pm - Get A Run For Your Money At BetVictor Handicap (7f)

SECRET FILM started the year with back-to-back victories in Meydan and Bahrain respectively. He finished both of those two races well to get up by small margins. Unfortunately, his form so far in the UK this summer has been below-par.

Charlie Appleby's gelding never got into his race in the Buckingham Palace Stakes where he came home down the field. He was then handed a poor draw in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket. He finished first of the horses on the far side of the course, but it was only good enough for 12th place. This assignment looks a much easier one.

Gusburn finished second off this mark of 97 at Goodwood (7f) last month. He did not get a clear run in that race, otherwise he may have landed the top prize. Richard Hannon's colt has escaped a rise in the ratings which makes him a big player.

Selection: Secret Film

Next Best: Gisburn

3.35pm - BetVictor Hungerford Stakes (Group 2, 7f)

CHINDT has been beaten three times this season and all those defeats have come at the highest level against Baaeed. Richard Hannon's colt does not have to worry about the world's top-rated horse in this Group Two Hungerford Stakes.

The four-year-old scored at this level in the Summer Mile at Ascot back in July. He was very game in that race, holding off the challenge of Mutasaabeq to score by just a head. The son of Wootton Bassett also prevailed over this C&D last season. He could be set for more success at the Berkshire Racecourse in the feature race of the day.

Pogo is another horse whose form has been rock-solid this year. He started his campaign in the UK with consecutive wins at Haydock and Newmarket. The latter came in the Group Three Criterion Stakes (7f).

At the age of six, Charles Hills' runner has a lot of experience, and he does not look to have lost any of his enthusiasm for racing. Expect to see another big challenge from the highest rated contender in this contest.

Selection: Chindt

Next Best: Pogo

4.10pm - Mettal UK British EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (1m3f)

RECHERCHER remains a maiden after six appearances, but on the evidence of what she has shown so far, it won't be long before she records her first success. This looks a great opportunity for her to do that.

The Nathaniel filly finished second on her opening run of the season at Goodwood. She hung left in the closing stages of that race, which did not help her chances. Ralph Beckett's runner was also runner-up at Carlisle two runs ago. A drop back down to 1m3f should suit her, as the extra 1f at Newmarket last time seemed a stretch for the three-year-old.

Suzy's Shoes also has lot of experience now, with five outings to date. The best she has done is finish third of 15 at Newbury in a maiden contest over 1m2f. This race appears much weaker than she has been faring in.

Selection: Rechercher

Next Best: Suzy's Shoes

4.45pm - Rangers Riding Ranch Amateur Jockeys' Handicap (1m4f)

FRONTISPIECE has won five times in his career and three of those victories have come at this course. His most recent success came on his final start of last season when he scored over this C&D by half-a-length.

Amanda Perrett's runner's form this season has been below par, apart from his second-place finish in a 20-runner field at this course back in April. He is now just 3lb higher than his last winning mark, which gives him a good chance of bouncing back.

Castel Gandolfo is a dual-purpose runner who has been running well over hurdles this summer. He returns to the Flat with an official rating of just 75. If he produces the same kind of performances as what he has produced in National Hunt racing, it may prove to be a very lenient mark.

Selection: Frontispiece

Next Best: Castel Gandolfo
