The Masters Preview 2023

The iconic Masters tournament is set to begin on 6 April 2023 with defending champion Scottie Scheffler the favourite for victory.

The Masters is the first Major golf tournament of the year and its course in Augusta, Georgia, is perhaps the most iconic course in the world.

From its humble beginnings in the Great Depression to the highly-lucrative phenomenon it is today, let’s explore the history of this famous tournament before discussing what may happen this year.

Masters Tournament History

To this day, the Masters remains the only Major tournament that’s hosted in the same venue each year. The world-famous Augusta National Golf Club has been the setting since the tournament’s inauguration in 1934, and the venue has long established itself as one of the most iconic golf locations on the planet.

The Great Depression was in full-swing when the first Masters tournament was held and its first winner, Horton Smith, only received his purse after 17 club members raised the funds needed. Since then, the Masters has gone from strength to strength, and today the purse stands at around $15 million.

Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus has won six Masters titles, the most of anyone else in history. Tiger Woods follows with five victories, whilst Arnold Palmer trails him with four.

Scheffler And McIlroy Among The Favourites

The 2023 edition is set to be one of the most exciting in recent memory, with last year’s winner Scottie Scheffler being among the favourites. Golf legend Rory McIlroy is another hotly-tipped contender, too, though the Irishman has never won at Augusta.

Neither has Jon Rahm. The 2021 US Open Winner finished fourth at the 2018 Masters, and the Spaniard is determined to write his name into Masters folklore with a victory in 2023. Rahm currently sits as the third-favourite behind Scheffler and McIlroy, but there is another legend who punters should keep an eye on.

Tiger Woods Set To Compete

That legend’s name is Tiger Woods. Though the icon isn’t considered a sure-fire favourite, it’s worth considering that he’ll be chasing his record-tying sixth Masters victory this year and he’ll also be looking to put his disappointing 2022 performance behind him.

The American competed at last year’s Masters whilst recovering from injuries sustained in a 2021 car accident, so we can expect a fully-fit Tiger Woods this time around. Though his odds aren’t great, golf fans should never discount Woods in the big tournaments.

Who To Watch Out For

Jordan Spieth, Cameron Smith, Justin Thomas, and Xander Schauffele are among the more realistic longer-odds selections at the 2023 Masters, and each one has the quality to produce a shock.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth won the 2015 Masters and he certainly has what it takes to go the distance this year. He may not be among the favourites to win, but he can definitely be backed for a strong finish.

Cameron Smith

Cameron Smith finished 3rd last year, and the Australian also possesses a runners-up finish at the 2020 Fall Masters, meaning that he knows how to play well in Georgia.

Smith won the British Open last year before moving to LIV Golf in one of the most controversial golf stories of the last year. No stranger to the limelight, Smith can always be counted on to deliver.

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas faces his longest-odds yet at the 2023 Masters, though that is unlikely to stop him from rectifying his slow start to the calendar year.

The 29-year-old is a two-time Major winner in his own right and he can never be discounted when the lights are on bright.

Xander Schauffele

If you’re looking for potential dark horses, then look no further than Xander Schauffele. The Californian has won the PGA Tour seven times and also finished runner-up at the 2019 Masters. Possessing all the attributes needed for Major tournament success, the 29-year-old represents one of the strongest longer-odds selections this year.

Coverage of the 2023 Masters will begin at 7:30 pm GMT on Thursday 6 April 2023. As always, the competition will emanate from Augusta, Georgia, USA.
