Varane And Casemiro Key For United - Carabao Cup Final

Historical data from Genting Casino has revealed that Manchester United duo Casemiro and Raphael Varane have won 90.91% of the major finals they have both appeared in, giving the Red Devils the edge ahead of their highly-anticipated Carabao Cup final against Newcastle this weekend.

Five-time Champions League winners Varane and Casemiro appeared in 11 major finals during their trophy-laden spells at Real Madrid - losing just one of them.

Varane And Casemiro Key

Varane has appeared in 14 major finals during his career and has lost only two of them - both being with France, one of which was on penalties. This means that the Frenchman has a spotless record in domestic finals - experience that will be welcomed at the trophy-starved Old Trafford.

Casemiro has been a revelation since his £70m arrival from Real Madrid last summer, providing much-needed protection to a midfield that was ridiculed in United’s dismal 21/22 season. He has a tackle-success rate of 77%, a pass-completion rate of 79%, and he has also chipped-in with 2 goals and three assists.

Statistics obtained by Genting Casino show that Manchester United complete 3.48 high regains per game, meaning that Casemiro’s pressing and tackling skills are key to their fast, direct style of play. Under Erik ten Hag this season, the Red Devils complete an average of 3.57 direct attacks per-game and have scored more goals from quick breaks (6) than any other Premier League side.

Of course, Casemiro is not the only reason why Manchester United have become the potent outfit they are, but his quality, experience, and world-class positioning make life a lot easier for United’s attacking players.

Casemiro’s Big Game Experience

Nobody doubted the Brazilian’s off-the-ball abilities, but not many could have predicted just how good Casemiro has been in possession since his arrival. Referred to as a ‘steady Eddie’ prior to his United debut, it seems that Casemiro’s long-time teammates Toni Kroos and Luka Modric  were overshadowing his abilities. At Real Madrid, Casemiro was pigeon-holed as merely an abrasive ball-winner whose role was to intercept play and pass to his more glamorous teammates. The Brazilian would screen for danger, and Kross or Modric would dictate play from there.

Except it isn’t that simple, and Casemiro is quickly reminding us all why he was such a valuable member of the team that won three Champions League titles in a row. He's been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt in elite football, and he’ll bring an invaluable level of experience to a relatively-young Manchester United side.

Varane’s Impressive Finals Record

As will his teammate, Raphael Varane. Signed by United in the summer of 2021, Varane’s first season was most likely one he’d rather forget as the Red Devils had their worst campaign in Premier League history. The Frenchman has, however, since established himself as a key part of United’s defence along with the aggressive and tenacious Lisandro Martinez. Both players have won big prizes and represent the only World Cup-winning centre-back partnership in the Premier League.

A classy, composed defender, Varane is in the 92nd-percentile of total shot blocks in the Premier League this season and has also won more aerial duels than any other Manchester United defender in 22/23. Considered a true ‘Rolls Royce’ of a defender, Varane’s most impressive statistic is his record in major finals - having appeared in 14 and won 12.

The 29-year-old has only lost two major finals in his career - the 2016 European Championship Final and the 2022 World Cup Final, the latter of which was on penalties. He’s won every domestic final he’s been in and his overall record in finals is a whopping 85.71%.

This will be music to Manchester United fans’ ears as they battle a Newcastle side in indifferent form and without their starting goalkeeper. As impressive as Eddie Howe’s men have been, the inclusion of serial-winners Casemiro and Raphael Varane give Manchester United the steel, determination, and experience they need to finally end their trophy drought.
