Liverpool v Manchester United Preview

It was only eleven months ago when Liverpool decimated a poor Manchester United team 4-0 to further add salt into the Red Devils’ deep wounds. Jurgen Klopp’s side had won 5-0 at Old Trafford the previous October and, at the time of their second 21/22 meeting, were fighting on four fronts for silverware. Check out our preview to what should be a fiery encounter.

Ten Hag Delivering Optimism

Salah, Mane, and Diaz were in sublime form at Anfield last April, however it’s Liverpool’s archrivals who are favoured to win in their upcoming meeting on 5 March. Manchester United are fresh from winning the Carabao Cup against Newcastle last Sunday and are also on a mega-high after knocking Barcelona out of the Europa League.

Erik ten Hag claimed that his Red Devils are capable of winning at Anfield, the first time United will have done so since January 2016. Wayne Rooney was the scorer that day - an individual who now feels like he played eons ago.

For Manchester United fans, the long wait for Premier League glory feels like exactly that. Ten Hag’s men may not win the title this year (the 10th anniversary of their last) but Old Trafford is now bouncing with the same ravenous optimism that it did during Ferguson’s era. It may have taken them a decade and more than a billion pounds to get there, but better times finally look like they’re on the horizon for the red half of Manchester.

It would take an Arsenal capitulation for Manchester United to come back into the title race, but the Red Devils are no stranger to a late-season leapfrog. They wrestled the title out of Newcastle’s hands in 95/96 before being on the receiving end of Arsenal and Manchester City’s momentum in 1997/98 and 2011/12 respectively. Stranger things have definitely happened, though it

Liverpool’s Struggles

Liverpool last faced Manchester United in August, losing 2-1 despite dominating possession for the majority of the game. Though the defeat was viewed forlornly by Liverpool fans, nobody could have expected that the game would have so perfectly encapsulated their entire season.

Liverpool were soft in the middle, error-prone in defence, and wasteful in attack - traits that would only become more apparent as the season developed. A 9-0 hammering of Bournemouth occurred the next week, but Liverpool would soon be back to their inconsistent selves in the following fixtures.

Jurgen Klopp is enduring his most difficult season at Anfield to date, but the Reds have taken 10 points from their last 12 and are on a run of four consecutive Premier League clean sheets. We’ve seen Liverpool undulate from the sublime to the ridiculous this season enough times, so to say they are back to their best would be surely tempting fa

Klopp hailed Ten Hag’s Manchester United side as a ‘’results machine’’ for grinding out victories and rising to challenges, just as his Liverpool side did only a few years ago.

The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool is one of the most historic football feuds in Europe. As illustrious as the rivalry is, their respective changes of fortunes over the last 12 months showcase how quickly football can change.
