Springboks v Argentina Preview - Rugby Championship Round 6

All to play for in Durban when the Springboks scrum down with Argentina in the final game of the Rugby Championship on Saturday. By the time kick-off comes around, the Boks will know exactly what is required to lift the Rugby Championship title and one expects they will be glued to the screens hoping the Wallabies can come away from Eden Park with an unlikely win in the earlier game. The Springboks kept their Rugby Championship hopes alive last week with a bonus point victory away in Argentina, leaving them level at the top with the All-Blacks and only trailing on points difference. They’re task is simple here and that’s to repeat last week’s triumph and hope the Wallabies can at least finish within seven points of New Zealand at Eden Park, something they’ve not managed to do since 1986.

While South Africa will be buoyed by having the home advantage this time round, Kings Park hasn’t exactly been a fortress for them as they’re currently on a run of W3-L7 here, losing to all of New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina themselves in that time so it’s not unfathomable to see an upset here, though we’d still be surprised.

By losing by more than seven last week, Argentina have all but ended their chances of taking their first Rugby Championship crown, needing a thumping bonus point win here to have even a remote chance of that happening.

While it’s set to be another year falling short in the table, Michael Cheika has proven that this Argentina side certainly aren’t to be slept on having already turned over Australia and New Zealand in recent months, while they also took a series victory at home to a tricky Scotland side.

The visitors won’t roll over easily, so the Boks will need to be at the top of their game if they want to claim their bonus point win, and their recent performances suggest they can do just that.

They bounced back from defeat to the Wallabies with a comprehensive 24-8 victory in Sydney, while they held off an Argentina surge last week by scoring twice late on themselves to secure the win in what was an accomplished performance.

While we’d expect South Africa to put on a show, Argentina aren’t the side they once were and it’s a lot easier said than done. While they lost by 16 points last week, it was two tries in the final five minutes that took it to that margin.

Only in their heavy defeat away in New Zealand have Argentina lost by more than the current 17-point handicap line on this game under current management, coving it in seven of their eight outings so far.

The argument stands that they have little to play for, though the have the opportunity to beat all of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in the same rugby championship for the first time in their history, and that is motivation enough for this Cheika side who we’ll back to make this as tricky as possible for their hosts.
