Recent Form

A disappointing showing in the Six Nations earlier this year means that the Red Roses’ will want to prove their peers wrong that they are still a top tier Rugby nation. England put on a good showing of their Southern Hemisphere tour of Australia, the series finished 2-1 and was a very close set of test matches, over the three matches England’s point difference was  +10 (England: 74, Australia: 64).

Although Argentina only won two of their six matches in the Rugby Championships, against Australia and New Zealand, they still did themselves proud as the Pumas are not quite at the level of their top-tier Southern Hemisphere competitors. Consistency seems to be the biggest issue for Argentina, after beating the Kiwis (25-18) they went on to get humiliated in the next game week by the team they just beat (53-3).

Argentina +16 Handicap

England have far more superiority in the head-to-head aspect of this matchup, out of the 24 games played between the two, Argentina have only won four and there was a draw back in 1981. The Red Roses haven’t stumbled in the last ten matches against the Pumas and over these games England’s points difference is 153 (15.3 per match) and with the even handicap line being around +- 15 we could seek some value here.

Of the last 13 Argentina losses, ten of them were by 16 points or more and two of the other losses were by 15 points whilst the final was a nine point loss to France (29-20). During the time of these 13 losses they managed to win five games which leaves Argentina with 10 losses by 16 or more points in their last 18 games which is an implied odds of 1.80.

As we mentioned earlier, England’s form before their Southern Hemisphere tour was a bit worrying if you’re a fan of the Red Roses. They’ve only won 12 of their last 20 matches in all competitions and lost four of their last six and have only covered a -15 handicap in five of these 20 matches which were against Canada, Tonga, Australia and Italy twice.

England have named a strong lineup for this match with Owen Farrell cleared of concussion protocols he will start and captain the side. Vice-Captains Ellis Genge and Jack Nowell are in the front row and right wing respectively. An England debutant in Alex Coles will be joined with Jonny Hill in the second row. Finally, Marcus Smith and Ben Youngs occupy to the scrum and fly half positions.
